Lady Wolves Season Closes with Last Second Loss

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team wrapped up the 2023-24 season hosting Meridian on Thursday, March 7. The Lady Eagles beat the Lady Wolves, 74-72.

The Lady Eagles got off to a hot start as they opened with a 10-4 scoring run to hold the lead against the Lady Wolves by that margin at the 6:17 mark. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a 9-3 scoring run to tie the game at 13-13 with 4:02 remaining in the quarter. The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter with a 5-2 scoring run to hold an 18-15 lead over the Lady Eagles as play ended.

The Lady Wolves carried the momentum over to the second quarter as they opened with a 7-4 scoring run to increase their lead to 25-19 with 7:50 left to play. The Lady Eagles responded with a 10-5 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 30-29 with 3:04 remaining. The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter with a 7-6 scoring run resulting in a 37-35 lead for the Lady Wolves as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.

The Lady Wolves continued to grow their lead with a 9-8 scoring run over the opening minutes of the third quarter which now stood at 46-43. The Lady Wolves then used a 7-2 scoring run to increase their lead to 53-45 with 3:28 left to play. The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter with an 8-2 scoring run increasing their lead to 61-47.

The Lady Eagles opened the fourth quarter with a 9-1 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 62-56 with 7:38 left to play. The Lady Eagles then used a 10-5 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 67-66 with 2:40 remaining. The Lady Eagles then outscored the Lady Wolves, 8-7, for the remainder of the game including scoring the game-winning shot with one second left while one final heave from the Lady Wolves was short to secure the 74-72 win.

Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) led the Lady Wolves and tied for the game lead in points with 24 paired with five rebounds, two assists, and one steal while Lashaunte Payne (Magee) had nine points and five rebounds with Ceara Myers (Baton Rouge) adding eight points and eight rebounds.

Myla Harbor (Farriday, LA), Jamea Smith (Jackson), and A'Shante Fleming (Canton) had seven points apiece with Smith adding a team-leading ten rebounds while Fleming had seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kayla Howard (Shaw) and Kiersten Haynes (Clinton) had four points each while Sequoia Bouldin (Hattiesburg) had two points to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin finishes the season 13-13 overall, 5-9 in conference play.
