Lady Wolves Beat Lady Dolphins for Fifth Straight Win
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team hit the road for their first game in almost two weeks as they faced off against Delgado on Wednesday, December 4. The Lady Wolves beat the Lady Dolphins, 83-72 running their winning streak to five games which started with their 101-69 win over the Lady Dolphins on November 14.
"This was a good road win especially for our first game back after a long Thanksgiving break. We shot the ball extremely well especially in the first half," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "Defensively, I felt like we did not do a great job in this game. We gave up far too many offensive rebounds which led to easy baskets for Delgado. In the third quarter, we went through a long drought without scoring, which is something we have to work on moving forward."
The Lady Wolves used a 14-10 scoring run to hold a lead by that margin over the Lady Dolphins with 6:25 left in the first quarter. The Lady Wolves then used a 9-1 scoring run to extend their lead to 23-11 with 3:30 remaining. The Lady Dolphins closed the first quarter with a 5-1 scoring run, but the Lady Wolves held their lead at 24-16.
The Lady Wolves opened the second quarter with a 10-2 scoring run as they expanded their lead to 34-18 with 6:21 left to play. The Lady Dolphins responded with a 5-4 scoring, but the Lady Wolves lead held at 38-23 with 2:06 remaining in the first half. The Lady Dolphins then closed out the half with an 8-5 scoring run; however, the Lady Wolves held the lead at 43-31 as the teams entered the locker rooms at halftime.
The Lady Dolphins started the third quarter with a 9-3 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 46-40 with 6:443 left on the clock. The Lady Dolphins then used another 9-3 scoring run to tie the game at 49-49 with 2:41 remaining. However, the Lady Wolves responded with a 9-5 scoring run to close out the quarter with a 58-54 lead.
The Lady Wolves began the fourth quarter with a 9-8 scoring run as they held the lead at 67-62 with 6:31 left to play. The Lady Wolves then used a 12-9 scoring run to push their lead to 79-71 with 2:20 remaining in the game. The Lady Wolves then outscored the Lady Dolphins, 3-2, over the final minutes to secure the 83-72 victory.
The Lady Wolves had four players in double-digit scoring numbers led by Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) who had 33 points along with six rebounds and five steals. For Wilkinson, this was her second-straight game of 30+ points while 33 sets a new career record she previously set with her 32 in the Lady Wolves last game against South Arkansas.
"Cookie Wilkinson was stellar tonight. Not only did she pace us on offense she also did an outstanding job defensively," added Stephens. "Kam Pruitt was also very good offensively and on the boards. Even though Jamyria Robinson's (St. Martin) stat line doesn't show it, she had a huge impact for us during this game, especially late on the defensive end."
Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) narrowly missed a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds along with three steals while Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) had 13 points with four rebounds and five assists and Kylinn Bell (Choctaw) had 11 points with two assists and one steal.
Kaylee Johnson (Booneville) had six points while Amari Barnes (Tylertown) had one point to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.
Co-Lin is now 7-3 overall and will return to action hosting Southern-Shreveport on Saturday, December 7. Tip-off between the Lady Jaguars and the Lady Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
