Lady Wolves Outlast Lady Tigers

BOONEVILLE – The Co-Lin Women's Basketball team resumed conference play on the road against Northeast Mississippi on Thursday, February 6. The Lady Wolves used a strong first and fourth quarter en route to a 71-65 victory over the Lady Tigers.

"I am really proud of our team and how they pulled off another gritty win," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "The road trip to Booneville is one of the longest ones in the league, and that makes this win huge for us. We were focused from the start and played outstanding defense early in the game which allowed us to jump out to a huge lead."

The Lady Wolves opened the first quarter with a 6-5 scoring run to hold a lead by that margin with 6:07 left to play. The Lady Wolves then went a 15-2 scoring run to push their lead to 21-7 with 2:56 remaining on the clock. The Lady Wolves closed out the quarter with a 7-2 run to hold a 28-9 lead at the end of the play.

The Lady Tigers opened the second quarter with a 6-4 scoring run making the Lady Wolves lead 32-15. The Lady Tigers then went on an 8-2 scoring run cutting the lead down to 34-23 with 3:56 remaining. The Lady Wolves then closed out the quarter with a 7-6 scoring run to hold a 41-29 lead as the teams entered the locker rooms for halftime.

The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter with a 9-2 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 43-38 with six minutes left on the clock. The Lady Wolves then used a quick 4-3 scoring run to push their lead to 47-41 with 2:43 left to play. The Lady Tigers then closed out the quarter with a 7-6 scoring run as the Lady Wolves held a 53-48 lead heading to the final quarter of play.

The Lady Wolves opened the fourth quarter with a 10-3 scoring run to push their lead to 63-51 with 7:14 left to play. The Lady Wolves then responded with an 8-5 scoring run to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 68-59 with 2:25 remaining in the game. The Lady Tigers closed out the game with a 6-3 scoring run, but the Lady Wolves secured the 71-65 victory.

"We made a lot of immature mistakes in the last two minutes of this game that we need to work to correct in the next few days," added Stephens. "Tyra Johnson was excellent for us off the bench defensively while Kam Pruitt also had a great game. Cookie Wilkinson got in foul trouble late in the game and we had other players step up and respond in critical moments."

Angel Wilkinson (Brookhaven) led the way for the Lady Wolves while leading all scorers with 25 points along with seven rebounds, five assists, and two shields while Kamaiyah Pruitt (Pass Christian) had a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds. Eymani Key (Lafayette, LA) once again provided a spark off the bench with nine points, three rebounds, three assists, and one steal.

Kylinn Bell (Choctaw) and Tyra Johnson (Morton) had six points each, while Jamyria Robinson (St. Martin) had four points with Maddison Mitchell (Baton Rouge, LA) and Kiersten Haynes (Clinton) adding two points each to round out the scoring for the Lady Wolves.

Co-Lin is now 13-9 overall, 3-4 in conference play and will return to conference play hosting Pearl River on Monday, February 10. Tip-off between the Lady Wildcats and the Lady Wolves is set for 5:30 p.m., at Mullen Gym in Wesson.
