Wilkinson Named Player of the Year

JACKSON – The Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) announced the Women's Basketball Postseason Awards on Tuesday, March 18. The Lady Wolves had one player named as an honoree as Angel Wilkinson was named an All-MACCC First Team as well as being voted as the MACCC Player of the Year.

Cookie led the Lady Wolves and MACCC in points per game at 22.6, a mark that was second in NJCAA Division I this season. She also led the team in three-point percentage at 33.3, a mark that was fourth best in the conference. Wilkinson led the team in steals per game and assists per game at 3.4 and 2.8 while being tied for second on the team in rebounds per game at 6.2. Her steals per game mark was also tops in the MACCC. Her season total points of 654, 100 steals, and 80 assists are all team-leading marks while 179 rebounds were third-most on the Lady Wolves. The total points and steals were also tops in the conference while the total points were also the second-most in the NJCAA this season.

"Cookie is a special player and one who is extremely deserving of Player of the Year in the MACCC," stated Co-Lin head coach Dr. Britta Stephens. "For the past two seasons, it has been my privilege to coach her and watch her grow as a player. Her success is not by accident. She has put countless hours of hard work to become the leading scorer in the MACCC and the second-leading scorer in the NJCAA."

For Wilkinson, the Player of the Year honor caps a year that saw her break the single-game scoring record with 44 in the December 7 game against Southern-Shreveport while the 654 points gives her one of the top single scoring seasons in Lady Wolves history and pushed her career scoring mark to 862, which is also one of the best marks in program history.

"What Cookie has done in only one and a half seasons at Co-Lin is nothing short of extraordinary," stated Stephens. "Our program is fortunate to have had her continue to build the legacy of Lady Wolf Basketball, and we have big shoes to fill without her next season."

"I am excited to continue watching Cookie achieve great things as she moves on to Jackson State next season," added Stephens.
