Lady Wolves Beat Lady Eagles for Conference Opening Win

WESSON – The Co-Lin Women's Soccer opened up MACCC play hosting Hinds on Tuesday, September 20. The Lady Wolves beat the Lady Eagles, 3-2.

The Lady Wolves dominated possession from the start of the game leading to early scoring opportunities, but none found the back of the net until the 22nd minute when freshman defender Chloe Nash (Byram) beat the Lady Eagles keeper with a goal from a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Sarah Nally (Brandon) to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Eagles then tied the game in the 41st minute after the Lady Wolves were called for a penalty in the box. The match remained tied at 1-1 as the horn sounded for halftime.

The Lady Wolves played the last 50 minutes of the match including the entire second half with a one player deficit due to a red card being given in the 40th minute of the match. However, the Lady Wolves continued to dominate the possession battle throughout the match leading to an early goal in the second half. Sophomore forward Taylor Ford (Florence) scored with an assist from sophomore defender Riely Laird (Clinton) in the 60th minute to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The final goal of the match for the Lady Wolves came just three minutes later as Nalley scored on a header off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Anacia Leyland (St. Helens, England) to increase the lead to 3-1. The final goal for the Lady Eagles came from a penalty kick in the 85th minute to cut the lead down to 3-2, but the Lady Wolves held strong in the final minutes of the match to secure the victory.

"It wasn't the prettiest performance by our team, but the character we showed in the second half to finish the game was excellent to see," said Co-Lin head coach Tom Cosgrave.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Moon (Poynton with Worth, England) made three saves on five shots on goal allowing the two goals on the penalty kicks.

"We missed too many chances in the first half, but in the second half we were more clinical," added Cosgrave. "Now it is time to prepare for a tough game coming up against Itawamba."

Co-Lin improves to 6-0-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play and will return to action hosting Itawamba on Friday, September 23. The action on the pitch between the Lady Wolves and the Lady Indians will kickoff at 11 am, at Stone Stadium.
