Lady Wolves Shutout Lady Bears for Third Straight Conference Win

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Women's soccer team took to the road to face off against Southwest on Tuesday, September 27. The Lady Wolves used an offensive explosion in the second half and maintained a clean sheet in the 4-0 victory over the Lady Bears.

The Lady Wolves accounted for six shots on goal in the first half, but none of the scoring chances found the back of the net, but the Lady Bears had just one shot on goal in the half which was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Alex Moon (Poynton with Worth, England). The game stood scoreless after the first half of play.

"We created many scoring opportunities in the first half, but we just couldn't finish those off," said Co-Lin head coach Tom Cosgrave. "We told the girls at halftime to maintain their composure and confidence and the goals would come."

The Lady Wolves took the halftime advice and ran with it as all four goals came in the second half. The scoring started early as freshman defender Chloe Nash (Byram) blasted a free kick past the outstretched hands of the Lady Bears keeper in the 47th minute to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 lead. The second goal of the game came from sophomore forward Alana Dear (Madison) in the 55th minute as she got a rebound off the Lady Bears keeper and put the ball in the back of the net to increase the lead to 2-0.

The final two goals of the match both came in the 61st minute as sophomore defender Jessie Heflin (Florence) scored on a header off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Sarah Nalley (Brandon). Thirty seconds later, freshman forward Charlie Cooper (Corby, England) beat the Lady Bears keeper with an assist from sophomore forward Taylor Ford (Florence) to give the Lady Wolves a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Wolves never allowed a shot on goal after the 55th minute of the match to secure the 4-0 victory.

"It was great to see four different goal scorers getting goals for us from different areas of the pitch," added Cosgrave.

Alex Moon saved all four shots on goal she faced playing 80 minutes of the match while sophomore goalkeeper Olivia Burnham (Florence) played out the final 10 minutes of the match as the Lady Wolves earned the combined clean sheet in the win.

Co-Lin is now 8-0-1 overall and 3-0-0 in conference play and will return to action hosting Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Friday, September 30. The action on the pitch between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Wolves will kickoff at 1 p.m., at Stone Stadium.
