Gulf Coast edges Lady Wolves 5-4

WESSON – The No. 16 ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Lady Bulldogs edged past the Co-Lin Lady Wolves 5-4 in recent tennis action. The Lady Wolves (3-2)return to action on Saturday against the Wallace State Community College at East Central Community College in Decatur.

"Our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles won key matches," said Co-Lin tennis coach Brenda Smith. "Ximena beat a strong player at No. 1 singles and Katy looked sharp at No. 3."

Co-Lin took two out of three doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of Ximena Daza and Carmen Manicea defeated Bianca Buie and Margarita Lopareva of Gulf Coast 8-2 and Katy and Kara Clark beat Megan Bankston and Jenna Lyons 8-6. At No. 3, Faith Bergeron and Ashlyn Locke lost to Jill Craft and Teirney Holmes of Gulf Coast 8-4.

In singles action, the Lady Wolves won two matches. At No. 1 singles, Daza defeated Buie 7-5, 6-3 and at No. 3, Katy Clark beat Bankston 6-2, 6-2.

Gulf Coast won four matches as Lopareva defeated Manicea at No. 2 6-3, 6-1; Holmes defeated Kara Clark 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4; Lyons defeated Locke 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5; and Craft beat Madison Franklin 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
