Athletic Training

Students who are interested in healthcare professions such as athletic training are encouraged to apply for our Athletic Training Student Aide Program. These student aides may assist with the educational practice activities listed in the NATA Official Statement such as stocking supplies, cleaning duties, making ice bags, and performing inventories. Other suggested activities may include assisting with enforcing athlete sign-in procedures, setting up/breaking down sideline equipment, and acting as “extra eyes and ears” for the certified/regulated athletic trainer.

THE ATC PROFESSION

Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations.  As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

For years, any college or university could have an athletic training program. But as of Jan. 1, 2004, such programs are now certified by the Commission on Accreditation of the Athletic Training Education.

Students who want to become a certified athletic trainer receive an estimated 800 hours of practical experience under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer, obtain a four-year degree in a CAATE accredited Athletic Training Education Program and successfully complete the Board of Certification (BOC) examination.
