Wolves take night cap 5-1 over Southwest

SUMMIT - The Co-Lin Wolves took the nightcap of a doubleheader 5-1 against the Southwest Bears.

"It was a good start to the season," said Co-Lin head coach Clay Smith. "Our guys are so glad to be back on the field. We got quality starts from both Caleb Rutledge and Jacob Spinks. We got some timely hits that allowed us to put together some good innings on offense. I thought our relief guys did a great job of throwing strikes and keeping Southwest from getting too much momentum. I can't express how glad we are to be back on the field."

After two scoreless innings, the Wolves (2-0) scored two runs in the top of the third inning. Will Harkins reached second on an error by the left fielder. Tom Biggs sacrificed Harkins to third. Peyton Parker hit line drive to center field scoring Harkins. Parker stole second and scored on Hunter Richardson's hard ground ball to give the Wolves 2-0.

The Wolves added to their lead in the top of the fourth. Noah Freeman reached on an error by the shortstop. Kenner Bizot hit a line drive to right field putting runners at first and third with no outs. Harkins hit an RBI single to left field scoring Freeman. Biggs hit a line drive to right field to score Bizot. Harkins scored on a Parker ground out to put the Wolves up 5-0.

The Bears scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth. Johnathan Havard doubled to center to score Mason Barker who reached on a two base error.

Parker led the Wolves at the plate with a single and 2 RBIs. Adding support with a single apiece were Harkins, Biggs, Richardson, Hunter Estes, and Bizot.

The Bears were led by Gage Gregory with two doubles and a single. Havard doubled. Jerod Williams singled.

Picking up the win for the Wolves was Jacob Spinks. He allowed no earned runs on 4 hits, struck out 6 and walked 1. Rhett Blackburn came into the game to relieve Spinks in the sixth inning. He allowed 1 hit and struck out 3.

Absorbing the loss for Southwest was Chase Guitreau. He allowed 5 runs (1 earned) on six hits, struck out 7 and walked none in 3 innings of work. Jacob McDaniel pitched 2.1 innings striking out 5 and walking 1. Blayze Boyd pitched 1.1 innings and struck out 2.
