Wolves Drop Pair of Contests to Dyersburg State

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Co-Lin Baseball team took to the road to open the 2022 season facing off against Dyersburg State in a neutral site contest at USA Stadium. The Eagles swept the Wolves taking game one, 5-2, and game two, 11-1.

GAME ONE

The Eagles took an early lead over the Wolves in the bottom of the first inning as Jalen Fithian hit a leadoff triple and then later scored on a passed ball making the score 1-0. However, the Wolves would respond by scoring their two runs and taking a lead in the top of the second as Kenner Bizot (Wesson) hit a leadoff double and then advanced to third on a single by Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, La.). After McKenzie stole second, Bizot scored on an RBI groundout by Brady Spring (Brookhaven) also advancing McKenzie to third on the play and making the score 1-1. The Wolves then took the lead as McKenzie scored on an RBI groundout by Noah Freeman (Mendenhall) making the score 2-1.

The Wolves held on to the 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth inning as the Eagles regained the lead with four runs including a tiebreaking three-run home run that made the score 5-2. The Wolves could not plate another run during the contest as the Eagles sealed the 5-2 win with back-to-back shutout innings.

Jacob Spinks (Jonesville, La.) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no-decision as he pitched 4.1 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Tanner Watts (Brookhaven) pitched 1.2 inning of relief and took the loss allowing one earned run on one hit with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

Despite a scoreless first inning from both teams, the Eagles jumped on the board in the bottom of the second inning plating four runs to take a 4-0 lead and then never looked back. The Eagles added four more runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to grab an 11-0 lead over the Wolves. The lone run for the Wolves came in the fifth inning as Braydon Muse (Florence) hit a solo home run and the Wolves looked to tack on more runs but a strikeout ended a potential scoring threat and sealed the 11-1 win for the Eagles.

Kade Parker (Cadeville, La.) started for the Wolves and picked up the loss pitching 2.1 innings allowing six runs, four earned, on five hits with two walks. Conner Wilson (Osyka), Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven), and Cooper Williams (Madison) all made relief appearances for the Wolves. Wilson and Hodges both pitched 0.2 innings with Wilson two earned runs on three hits with two strikeouts while Hodges allowed three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks. Williams pitched 0.1 innings and had one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 0-2 on the season and will have their home opener on Saturday, February 12 against Mineral Area College (Ill.). The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m., at Sullivan Field.
