Wolves Drop Contest To Bears

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team played host to Southwest in the Coca-Cola/PowerAde on Tuesday, March 1. The Bears beat the Wolves in the single game contest, 11-5, in nine innings.

The Bears started the scoring early as they plated three runs in the top of the first and held a 3-0 advantage over the Wolves. The Bears then limited the Wolves to four baserunners in the first three innings, while extending their lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.

The first runs came for the Wolves in the bottom half of the fourth as they plated two to cut the Bears lead down to 5-2 as Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.) drew a lead-off walk and then DJ Walker (Brandon) smashed his first home run of the year to right field.

The big inning for the Bears came in the sixth as they plated six runs as the Wolves used six pitchers in the inning and the lead grew to 11-2. The final three runs of the game for the Wolves came in the bottom half of the sixth as Kenner Bizot (Wesson) hit a lead-off single and advanced to third on a double by Biggs. Bizot then scored on an RBI groundout by Walker while Biggs later scored on a single by Brady Spring (Brookhaven) who later scored in the inning as Josh Boone (Foxworth) was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to make the score 11-5. 

The Bears then went on to allow the Wolves just three baserunners over the final three innings to earn the 11-5 win.

Brady Spring was the only member of the Wolves with a multi-hit game as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with one double and one RBI. Kenner Bizot, Tom Biggs, and DJ Walker had one hit each as Biggs had one double while Walker had one home run. Walker led the Wolves in RBIs with three while Josh Boone had one. Reed Barlow and Josh Boone had one stolen base each.

Jacob Spinks (Jonesville, La.) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss. Spinks pitched 5.1 innings allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven), Cooper Williams (Madison), and Hunter Rhymes (Lucedale) all made relief appearances for the Wolves with Hodges and Williams allowing one run with one walk while Rhymes allowed two runs on two hits. Nate Anderson (Poplarville) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit with one walk. Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, La.) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts and one walk.

Co-Lin is now 5-8 overall and the Wolves will return to action hosting a doubleheader against Delgado on Tuesday, March 8. First pitch at Sullivan Field is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
