Wolves Drop Doubleheader Against Delgado

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action hosting Delgado in a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday, March 9. The Dolphins swept the games taking game one, 7-1, and game two, 8-1.

Game One

Delgado jumped out to an early lead after the first two innings scoring one run in both and making the score 2-0. The Dolphins also kept the Wolves offense quiet allowing just three baserunners in the first five innings and no hits until the third inning when Reed Barlow (Florence) hit a lead-off double but was left on base.

The Dolphins big inning came in the sixth as they plated five runs to increase their lead to 7-0. The lone run for the Wolves came in the bottom half of the inning as Kenner Bizot (Wesson) hit a two-out single, advanced to second on a single by Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.), and then scored on a double by Brady Spring (Brookhaven) to make the score 7-1. The Wolves then looked to chip away at the Dolphins lead in the bottom of the seventh as Noah Freeman (Mendenhall) drew a one-out walk, but back-to-back outs ended the game and sealed the 7-1 win for Delgado.

Tom Biggs was the only member of the Wolves with a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-3 at the plate while Kenner Bizot, Brady Spring, and Reed Barlow getting one hit each. Spring also had one RBI during the contest.

Kade May (Florence) got the start on the mound for the Wolves and fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss. May pitched five innings allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) made a relief appearance allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and one hit-by-pitch, while Tedrick Page (Taylorsville) pitched two innings of scoreless relief retiring all five batters he faced and had one strikeout.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader featured no score by either team until the third inning as both starting pitchers worked out of early scoring chances in the first two innings.

Delgado broke the scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the third highlighted by a three-run home run to take a 4-0 lead over the Wolves.  The lone run for the Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as Reed Barlow hit a one-out single advanced to second and third on singles by Grant Allen (Puckett) and Josh Boone (Foxworth) then scored on a single by Gavin Brogden (Brookhaven) to make the score 4-1.

Delgado then doubled their run total with four runs in the seventh to increase their lead to 8-1 and got a game-ending strikeout in the bottom half of the inning after Beau Coumbe (Utica) was hit-by-pitch with two outs.

Josh Boone, Gavin Brogden, Brady Spring, Jordan McKenzie, Reed Barlow, and Grant Allen all had one hit apiece, while Brogden had one RBI during the contest.

Tom Biggs got the start on the mound for the Wolves and fell to 0-1 with the loss. Biggs pitched three innings allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Tanner Watts (Brookhaven) pitched three innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with four strikeouts and one walk, while Lance Elsen (Madison) pitched one inning of relief allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Co-Lin is now 5-10 overall and the Wolves will return to action with their conference opening series against Coahoma on Sunday, March 13. First pitch between the Tigers and the Wolves will be at 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field.
