Wolves Sweep Conference Opener

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team opened conference play hosting Coahoma on Sunday, March 13. The Wolves swept the Tigers taking game one, 15-4, and game two, 11-3.

Game One

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead as they scored one run in the top of the first. The lead would be short-lived as the Wolves plated two runs in the bottom half of the innings as Josh Boone (Foxworth) reached first on a dropped third strike. Kenner Bizot (Wesson) then took one swing of the bat and drove the ball off the scoreboard for a two-run home run (his second of the season) to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers tied the game with another solo run in the top of the second, but once again the Wolves took the lead with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Kade Parker (Cadeville, La.) drew a one-out walk, stole second, and then later scored on a single by Boone to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers took a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third. However, the Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead as Bizot hit a lead-off single then advanced to third on a double by Brady Spring (Brookhaven). Bizot later scored on a passed ball then Spring later scored on a sacrifice fly by Parker to make the score 5-4.

The Wolves increased their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Gavin Brogden hit a two-out triple and then scored on a single by Bizot. Bizot then scored on a triple by Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.) giving the Wolves a 7-4 lead. The Tigers scored one run in the top of the fifth to cut the Wolves lead down to 7-5; however, the Wolves scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 9-5. Boone started the inning being hit-by-pitch while Brogden followed with a single as both runners advanced bases during the play to third and second respectively. Boone and Brogden then scored on a two-RBI double by Bizot.

The Wolves added another pair of runs to their lead in to bottom of the seventh as Braydon Muse was hit-by-pitch with one out and Reed Barlow (Florence) drew a walk. Muse advanced to third as Boone reached on a fielder's choice while Barlow was forced out on the play. Muse then scored on a single by Brogden while Boone later scored in the inning as Biggs drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 11-5.

The final three runs for the Wolves came in the bottom of the eighth as Spring lead off by reaching base on an error while Harrison Mohead (Madison) reached on a fielder's choice as Spring was forced out on the play. Parker then singled while Barlow later drew a walk with two-outs to load the bases. Mohead, Parker, and Barlow then scored on a walk-off, three-RBI double by Boone to seal the 14-5 win.

Kenner Bizot had a huge game at the plate for the Wolves as he successfully reached base in all five plate appearances going 4-for-4 and drawing one walk. Gavin Brogden had three hits while Josh Boone, Brady Spring, and Kade Parker had two hits apiece and Tom Biggs had one hit as the Wolves totaled 14 hits during the game. Parker, Boone, Spring, and Bizot all had one double while Brodgen and Biggs also added one triple and Bizot had one home run. Bizot led the Wolves in RBIs with five while Boone had four, Biggs had two, with Brogden and Parker adding one RBI each.

Jacob Spinks (Jonesville, La.) got the start for the Wolves and picked up a no-decision pitching 2.1 innings allowing four runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, La.) picked up the win (1-0 record) in a relief appearance pitching 5.2 innings allowing one run on four strikeouts with one walk.

Game Two

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as Josh Boone hit a lead-off double and advanced to third on a single by Gavin Brogden. Boone then scored on an RBI groundout by Kenner Bizot. Brady Spring drew a two-out walk while Brogden later scored on a passed ball as Spring then scored on a single by Harrison Mohead making the score 3-0.

The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the second inning to cut the Wolves lead down to 3-2; however, the Wolves answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Boone reached on an error with two outs to get the offense going and then stole second. Boone then scored on a single by Brogden who then stole second and scored on a double by Bizot making the score 5-2.

The Wolves increased their lead to 7-2 with two runs in the bottom of the third as Mohead hit a one-out double and then scored on a triple by DJ Walker (Brandon) as Walker later scored on a fielding error in the inning. The Wolves added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Bizot drew a one-out walk and then Biggs took one swing of the bat and deposited the ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run (his second of the season) making the score 9-2.

The final run for the Tigers came in the top of the fifth making the score 9-3. The Wolves final two runs came in the bottom half of the inning as Walker hit a lead-off triple and then scored on a passed ball as Braydon Muse drew a walk. Muse later scored in the inning on a single by Bizot making the score 11-3.

The Tigers only had three total baserunners all via walks through the sixth and seventh innings as the Wolves secured the 11-3 win and the sweep of the Tigers.

Gavin Brogden and Harrison Mohead led the way for the Wolves offense in game two with three hits apiece. Kenner Bizot and DJ Walker had two hits each while Josh Boone and Tom Biggs had one hit as the Wolves totaled 12 hits during the game. Mohead, Bizot, and Boone had one double each while Walker had two triples and Biggs had one home run. Bizot and Biggs led the Wolves inn RBIs with two each while Brogden, Mohead, and Walker had one RBI each.

Kade Parker got the start for the Wolves and improved to 2-1 on the season. Parker pitched five innings allowing three unearned runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. Cooper Williams (Madison) and Noah Freeman (Mendenhall) both pitched one inning of scoreless relief with Williams allowing one walk while Freeman had two strikeouts and two walks.

Co-Lin is now 7-10 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Wolves return to action hosting Hinds in a conference play doubleheader on Wednesday, March 16. First pitch between the Eagles and the Wolves will be at 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field.
