Wolves Drop Series Against Hinds

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action hosting Hinds in a conference play doubleheader on Wednesday, March 16. The Eagles swept the Wolves taking game one, 13-3, and game two 15-10.

Game One

Hinds wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first, four runs in the second, and four runs in the fourth while holding the Wolves scoreless throughout these innings to hold a 10-0 lead.

The four runs for the Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as Reed Barlow (Florence) drew a lead-off walk and then Harrison Mohead (Madison) singled as both players advanced to third and second respectively on the play. Barlow and Mohead then scored on a two-RBI triple by Josh Boone (Foxworth), who then scored on a sacrifice fly by Gavin Brogden making the score 10-3. Kenner Bizot (Wesson) then singled and scored as Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.) tripled making the score 10-4.

The Eagles then scored one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh while holding the Wolves scoreless to secure the 13-4 win in game one.

Josh Boone and Kenner Bizott were the only members of the Wolves with multi-hit games going 2-for-4 at the plate. Tom Biggs, Harrison Mohead, and Braydon Muse (Florence) had one hit each as the Wolves totaled seven hits with Boone and Biggs having one triple each. Boone led the Wolves with two RBIs while Brogden and Biggs had one RBI each.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 2-3 on the season. May pitched one inning allowing six runs on five hits with one strikeout and two walks. Andrew Smith (Morton) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts while Will Whittington (Hattiesburg) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit with two strikeouts and four walks. Nate Anderson (Poplarville) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks while Tedrick Page (Taylorsville) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout.

Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader saw Hinds jump out to an early lead once again as they scored five runs in the first, two runs in the second, and two runs in the third to hold a 9-0 lead.

The Wolves first runs of the game came in the bottom of the third as they scored four runs to cut the lead down to 9-4. Braydon Muse, Noah Freeman (Mendenhall), and Boone drew three straight walks to load the bases with no outs. Muse then scored on a passed ball as Brogden drew a fourth straight walk to load the bases with no outs again. Freeman and Boone then scored on consecutive passed balls while Brogden scored on a single by Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, La.) making the score 9-4.

The Eagles added two runs in the top of the fourth to increase their lead to 11-4; however, the Wolves responded with their own pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Freeman hit a lead-off single and then advanced to second on a one-out single by Brogden. Freeman and Brgden then scored on a two-RBI double by Kenner Bizot making the score 11-6.

The Eagles added their final four runs of the game in the top of the sixth pushing their lead to 15-6, but the Wolves once again responded with a matching score in the bottom half of the inning. Boone, Brogden, and Bizot hit three straight singles to start the inning as Boone scored on the single by Bizot and Brogden then scored on a single by McKenzie. Bizot and McKenzie then scored on a single by Colton Womack (Liberty) making the score 15-10.

The Wolves got a lead-off single by Freeman in the bottom of the seventh, but three straight outs including back-to-back strikeouts ended the game and secured the 15-10 win and sweep for the Eagles.

Gavin Brogden, Kenner Bizot, Jordan McKenzie, Colton Womack, and Noah Freeman had two hits each while Boone had one hit as the Wolves totaled 11 hits during the game including one double by Bizot. Bizot led the Wolves in RBIs with three while McKenzie and Womack had two RBIs apiece.

Tom Biggs got the start for the Wolves and fell to 0-2 on the season pitching 0.2 innings allowing five runs on two hits with one strikeout and four walks. Tanner Watts (Brookhaven) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk while Conner Wilson (Osyaka) pitched one inning of relief allowing four runs, one earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched two innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit with two strikeouts and two walks. Hunter Rhymes (Lucedale) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing three runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk while Cooper Williams (Madison) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout. Lance Elsen (Madison) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 7-12 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Wolves will return to action with a conference play doubleheader at East Mississippi on Saturday, March 19. The first pitch between the Lions and the Wolves is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Gerald Poole Field.
