Wolves Drop Pair of Contests to Pearl River

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team played host to No. 3 Pearl River in a conference play doubleheader on Wednesday, August 6. The Wildcats swept the Wolves taking game one, 15-5, and game two, 9-1.

Game One

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first as they scored eight runs and held an 8-0 lead as the Wolves came up to bat in the bottom half of the inning. The Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom of the first as Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.) hit a lead-off double while Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, La.) followed by draw a walk. Kenner Bizot (Wesson) then took one swing of the bat and drove a 3-2 pitch over the center field fence for a three-run home run (his fourth of the season) making the score, 8-3.

The Wildcats then scored four in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth to increase their lead to 15-3, while holding the Wolves to three singles throughout those innings.

The final two runs for the Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as McKenzie got the offense going with a one-out single while Josh Boone (Foxworth) followed by drawing a walk as McKenzie was lifted for a pinch run appearance by Kade Parker (Cadeville, La.). Parker then advanced to third as Boone later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Parker then scored on an RBI-groundout by Bizot while Boone later scored on a wild pitch making the score 15-5. Brady Spring (Brookhaven) then drew a walk with two-outs, but a strikeout ended the bottom of the fifth and secured the 15-5 win for the Wildcats.

Tom Biggs and Jordan McKenzie led the Wolves offense with two hits each while Kenner Bizot, Harrison Mohead (Madison), and Braydon Muse (Florence) had one hit apiece including one double for Biggs and one home run for Bizot. Bizot also led the Wolves in RBIs with four.

Andrew Smith (Morton) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 0-1 on the season pitching 0.2 innings allowing eight runs, five earned, on six hits with one walk. Noah Freeman (Mendenhall) pitched one inning of relief allowing four runs on two hits with three walks. Hunter Rhymes (Lucedale) and Will Whittington (Hattiesburg) both pitched 1.2 innings of relief as Rhymes allowed three runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks while Whittington had a scoreless appearance allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two

The Wildcats once again jumped out to an early lead scoring one run in the first and three runs in the third while holding the Wolves hitless with just one baserunner via hit-by-pitch through those innings as the score was 4-0.

Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth as both teams combined for just one hit and one walk for the Wildcats and the Wolves had three walks during the innings. The Wildcats then doubled their lead to 8-0 with four runs in the sixth and added their final run in the seventh to make the score, 9-0.

The Wolves scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh as Josh Boone drew a one-out walk and then advanced to third on a single by Kenner Bizot breaking the no-hitter bid by the Wildcats. Boone then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brady Spring making the score, 9-1, while a line out then ended the game giving the Wildcats a 9-1 win.

Kenner Bizot got the lone hit for the Wolves in the game, while Brady Spring led the team in RBIs with one.

Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 0-1 on the season pitching 3.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Cooper Williams (Madison) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit with one strikeout and one walk while Jordan McKenzie pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing four runs on four hits with two walks. Nate Anderson (Poplarville) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing one run with two strikeouts and three walks.
