Wolves Celebrate Sophomore Day

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team hosted their home regular season finale with a doubleheader against Jones on Wednesday, April 21. The Bobcats swept the Wolves taking game one, 11-3, and game two, 8-6.

Game One

The Bobcats jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the first, one in the second, and two in the third innings while holding the Wolves to just one baserunner via a walk to hold a 7-0 lead going to the bottom of the third.

The Wolves scored their first run in the bottom of the third as Reed Barlow (Florence) drew a lead-off walk, advanced to second on an error, and then scored as Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.) singled making the score, 7-1.

The Bobcats added one run in the fifth inning to increase their lead to 8-1, while the Wolves added one run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Jordan McKenzie (Frankilinton, La.) took one swing of the bat and smashed a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence (his third home run of the season) making the score, 8-2.

The Bobcats added their final three runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 11-2. The Wolves added one run as Wade Nichols (Brandon) and Aaron Coats hit back-to-back one-out singles. Nichols then scored on a two-out RBI-double by Biggs, but Coats was out at home on the play ending the game and securing the 11-3 win for the Bobcats.

Tom Biggs was the only member of the Wolves with a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 at the plate. Jordan McKenzie, Kenner Bizot (Wesson), DJ Walker (Brandon), Wade Nichols, and Aaron Coats had one hit apiece as the Wolves totaled seven hits including one double each for Biggs and Bizot and one home run for McKenzie. Biggs also led the team in RBIs with two, while McKenzie had one RBI.

Tanner Watts (Brookhaven) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 1-4 on the season pitching two innings allowing five runs, four earned, on three hits with one strikeout and two walks. Conner Wilson (Osyka) pitched two innings of relief allowing two runs on three hits, Will Whittington (Hattiesburg) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing four runs, three earned, on three hits with one strikeout and one walk, while Andrew Smith (Morton) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Game Two

The Bobcats once again jumped out to an early lead scoring two runs in the first inning and three runs in the second to hold a 5-0 lead going to the bottom half of the second. However, the Wolves responded with four runs in the bottom of the second as DJ Walker and Brady Spring (Brookhaven) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. Walker then scored on an RBI-single by Harrison Mohead (Madison) making the score, 5-1. Spring and Mohead later advanced to third and second base respectively on a passed ball as Spring then later scored on an RBI-single by Noah Freeman (Mendenhall). Mohead and Freeman then scored on a two-RBI double by Tom Biggs making the score, 5-4.

The Bobcats then added one run the third and their final two runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 8-4. The Wolves responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth as Josh Boone (Foxworth) took one swing of the bat and smashed an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a lead-off solo home run (his first of the season) making the score, 8-5. Two batters later, DJ Walker crushed a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for a solo home run (his fourth of the season) making the score, 8-6.

The Bobcats then held the Wolves to just one hit over the final two innings to secure the 8-6 game two win and sweep over the Wolves.

Brady Spring led the Wolves offense in game two going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while DJ Walker also had two hits during the contest. Tom Biggs, Josh Boone, Kenner Bizot, Harrison Mohead, and Beau Coumbe (Utica) had one hit each as the Wolves totaled 11 hits including one double each for Biggs and Spring along with one home run each for Boone and Walker.

Jordan McKenzie got the start for the Wolves and fell to 1-2 with the loss pitching 1.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on one hit with one strikeout and five walks. Cooper Williams (Madison) pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks, Nate Anderson (Poplarville) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) and Jacob Spinks (Jonesville) both made scoreless relief appearances as Hodges pitched 1.1 innings with one hit and one strikeout while Spinks pitched one inning allowing one hit.

Co-Lin is now 11-28 overall and 6-18 in MACCC play. The Wolves return to action with a road contest against Northwest on Saturday, April 23. First pitch between the Rangers and the Wolves is scheduled for 2 p.m., at Jim Miles Field.
