Wolves Drop Pair of Contests to Rangers

SENATOBIA – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to conference action with a road doubleheader against Northwest Mississippi on Saturday, April 23. The Rangers swept the Wolves taking game one, 14-2, and game two, 14-7.

Game One

The Wolves were held scoreless in the first two innings despite loading the bases in the first inning and getting two baserunners on in the second while the Rangers scored five runs in the first and two runs in the second to hold a 7-0 lead.

The Wolves scored their two runs in the top of the third as Josh Boone (Foxworth) and Kenner Bizot (Wesson) drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning while DJ Walker (Brandon) then singled to load the bases with no outs. Boone and Bizot later scored in the inning on two-out, two-RBI single by Noah Freeman (Mendenhall) making the score, 7-2.

The Rangers then scored six in the third inning and one in the fourth inning to make the score 14-2 while holding the Wolves to one single in each of the fourth and fifth innings to seal the 14-2 win in game one.

Noah Freeman was the only member of the Wolves with a multi-hit game 2-for-3 at the plate. Tom Biggs (Columbia, La.), Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, La.), Josh Boone, DJ Walker, and Brady Spring (Brookhaven) had one hit apiece as the Wolves totaled seven hits. Freeman led the Wolves in RBIs with two.

Jacob Spinks (Jonesville, La.) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 1-4 overall pitching 2.1 innings allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, on seven hits with two walks. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout.

Game Two

The Wolves scored one run in the first inning as Tom Biggs hit a lead-off single, advanced to second on wild pitch, stole third, and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Josh Boone giving the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

The Rangers responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead and then added one run in the third to increase the lead to 3-1. The Wolves were held to just one hit combined in the second through fifth innings while the Rangers scored five runs in the fourth and two runs in the fifth to hold 10-1 lead after five innings of play.

The Wolves then responded with six runs in the six inning as Reed Barlow (Florence) hit a lead-off single and then advanced to third on a double by Wade Nichols (Brandon). Jordan McKenzie then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs as Barlow scored while Boone drew a second consecutive walk making the score, 10-2. Nichols then scored on a passed ball, while McKenzie also scored during an error on the play making the score, 10-4. Boone then later scored on an RBI-single by Colton Womack (Liberty) while Womack scored as Harrison Mohead (Madison) took one swing of the bat and drove an 0-1 pitch over the right field fence for a two-run home run (his second of the season) making the score, 10-7.

The Rangers then scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and kept the Wolves from scoring in the top of the seventh to secure 14-7 game two win and sweep over the Wolves.

Reed Barlow was the only member of the Wolves with a multi-hit game going 2-for-3 at the plate. Tom Biggs, Wade Nichols, Colton Womack, and Harrison Mohead had one hit apiece as the Wolves totaled six hits including one double for Nichols and one home run for Mohead. Mohead and Boone led the Wolves in RBIs with two each while Womack had one RBI.

Kade Parker (Cadeville, La.) got the start for the Wolves and fell to 4-5 overall pitching four innings while allowing eight runs on ten hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Cooper Williams (Madison) pitched one inning of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits with one strikeout. Will Whittington (Hattiesburg) pithed 0.2 innings of relief allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits with one strikeout and one walk while Kade May pitched 0.1 innings of relief with one walk.

Co-Lin is now 11-30 overall and 6-20 in MACCC play. The Wolves will finish the 2022 regular season with a road doubleheader against Gulf Coast on Tuesday, April 26. First pitch between the Wolves and the Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m., at Farris Field in Perkinston.
