Wolves Split Day Against Eagles and Bears

SUMMIT – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action with a pair of road contests on the campus of Southwest Mississippi. The Wolves split the day as their comeback effort fell just short against No. 15 Hinds, 7-6, and then earned a hard-fought win against Southwest.

GAME ONE

The first game saw the Wolves fall behind early as Hinds scored single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Wolves then cut the lead in half with a run of their own in the top of the third inning as Brentley Berry (Magee) reached base on an error and then later scored on a two-out RBI double by Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) making the score, 2-1.

The Eagles then responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 5-1. The Wolves added a run in the top of the fifth as Josh Boone (Foxworth) hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and then later scored on an RBI single by Alford Hill (Isola) making the score 5-2. The Eagles responded with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to make the score, 6-2.

The Wolves added another solo run in the top of the sixth as Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) was hit-by-pitch and later scored on a passed ball, but once again the Eagles matched the score with one of their own in the bottom of the seventh to regain a four-run lead at 7-3.

The Wolves then cut the lead down to one run with three runs in the top of the eighth as Ryland Hemphill (Florence), Babineaux, and Braydon Evans (Florence) led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Hemphill and Babineaux then scored as Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) and Berry drew back-to-back walks making the score 7-5. Evans then later scored on two-out RBI single by Harrison Mohead while a groundout then left the potential tying and winning runs at third and second for the Wolves.

The Eagles then got the Wolves to go three-up-and-three-down in the top of the ninth to secure the 7-6 win.

The Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team as Josh Boone and Ryland Hemphill had two hits apiece while Sam Thomas, Harrison Mohead, Alford Hill, Hayden Babineaux, Braydon Evans, and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Thomas, Mohead, Hill, and Brentley Berry had one RBI each for the Wolves.

Conner Wilson (Osyka) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 1-3 overall with the loss. Wilson threw six innings allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of relief allowing one earned run on one hit with one walk while Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with one hit and one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day got off to a different start for the Wolves as they took an early lead with a single run in the top of the first. Brentley Berry drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a single by Josh Boon, and then later scored on an error making the score, 1-0. However, the Bears tied the game with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

The game remained tied until the Wolves scored four runs in the top of the third as Josh Boone drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and then scored on a passed ball while Harrison Mohead drew a second straight one-out walk. Mohead then advanced to second on error, stole third, and scored on an RBI single by Alford Hill making the score, 3-1. Hill then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Hagan Coumbe (Utica). Coumbe then took second and third on one error and scored on an RBI single by Sam Thomaa making the score, 5-1.

The Bears then scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to cut the Wolves lead down to 5-3. The Wolves then had their second four-run inning in the top of the eighth as Braydon Evans drew a leadoff walk to get thing going offensively.

Evans then advanced to second on a groundout by Isaac McClenty (Ridgeland) and then advanced to third as Berry was hit-by-pitch. Evans then scored to increase the lead to 6-3 while Boone reached on an error after a bunt allowing Berry to score on the play increasing the lead to 7-3 and Boone went to second on the play. Mohead then drew a walk, then the Wolves pulled off a double steal as Boone swiped third while Mohead took second. Boone and Mohead then scored on a two-RBI single by Hill making the score 9-3.

However, the Bears responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Wolves lead back down to two runs. The Wolves scored their final run in the top of the ninth as Babineaux hit a leadoff single, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Berry increasing the lead to 10-7. The Bears then had the leadoff batter hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wolves ended the potential rally with a fly out and back-to-back strikeouts to seal the 10-7 victory.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team as Sam Thomas went 3-for-4 with Brentley Berry, Josh Boone, and Alford Hill collecting two hits each, while Hagan Coumbe and Hayden Babineaux had one hit apiece. Hill led the Wolves with three RBIs while Berry, Coumbe, and Thomas had one RBI each.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 1-0 on the season. Pittman threw 5.2 innings allowing three runs, all earned, on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Kade May (Florence) pitched two innings of relief allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Coby Gollot earned his second save of the season with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with one hit and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin moves to 5-12 overall and will return to action on the road on Tuesday, March 7. The Wolves will face off against the Lions of East Mississippi at 2:30 p.m., and the Rangers of Northwest Mississippi at 6 p.m., at Jim Miles Field in Senatobia.
