Wolves Split With Lions and Rangers
SENATOBIA – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action with a pair of contests in non-conference action against East Mississippi and Northwest Mississippi. The Wolves split the day as they dropped game one against the Lions, 6-4, and then rebounded to win game two in come-from-behind fashion against the Rangers, 7-5.
GAME ONE
The Lions got on the board first in the game as they scored one run in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Wolves responded with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Brentley Berry (Magee) drew a leadoff walk. Berry then took second on a passed ball, took third on a wild pitch, and then scored later in the inning to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lions once again took a one-run lead as they scored a single run in the top of the fourth to make the score 2-1. However, the Wolves scored two in the bottom half of the inning to take their first lead of the game as Josh Boone (Foxworth) hit a leadoff single. Boone then stole second and later stole third while an error on the play allowed him to score and tie the game at 2-2. Harrison Mohead (Madison) then took one swing of the bat and smashed a solo home run to left field to give the Wolves a 3-2 lead.
The Lions then took command of the game as they scored four runs while taking advantage of an error by the Wolves in the inning to take a 6-3 lead in the top of the fifth. The Wolves continued to fight their way back in the game and began a comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh as Braydon Evans Florence hit a one-out double to get the Wolves offense going. Evans then later scored on a two-out RBI single by Berry making the score 6-4. Tyler Wolfe (Covington) then followed with a single giving the Wolves two runners on with two outs, but the potential game winning run never reached base as a strikeout ended the inning and secured the 6-4 win for the Lions.
The Wolves totaled seven hits as a team as Brentley Berry, Tyler Wolfe, Josh Boone, Ryland Hemphill (Florence), Harrison Mohead, Braydon Evans, and Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) had one hit each. Berry and Mohead had one RBI each for the Wolves.
Conner Wilson (Osyka) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 1-4 overall with the loss. Wilson pitched 4.2 innings allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing one unearned run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.
GAME TWO
The Rangers jumped out to a big lead over the Wolves as they scored two runs in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third to hold a 5-0 lead at that point. However, the Wolves started their comeback with a single run in the top of the fourth as Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) and Alford Hill (Isola) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Thomas then advanced to third on an error on a pickoff attempt by the Rangers pitcher and then scored as Hill was caught in a rundown while stealing second making the score, 5-1.
The Wolves then added another run in the top of the fifth as Josh Boone hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored on an RBI groundout by Harrison Mohead making the score 5-2.
The big inning for the Wolves came in the top of the sixth as they took advantage of two errors by the Rangers and scored four runs to take the lead. Christian Cameron (Brandon) and Luke Knight (Terry) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning and then advanced to third and second respectively on a wild pitch. Cameron then scored on an RBI single by Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) while Knight scored after on an error on a pickoff attempt by the Rangers pitcher allowing Easterling to take second. Brentley Berry then reached on an error while Easterling scored on the same play tying the game at 5-5. Berry then advanced to second on a passed ball, took third on a groundout, and then scored the go-ahead run on wild pitch making the score, 6-5, for the Wolves.
The Wolves final run of the game came in the top of the seventh as Hill drew a walk with one out, advanced to second on an error, and then later scored as Berry reached on a fielder's choice making the score, 7-5.
The Rangers looked to win the game in walk-off fashion as they loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Wolves got three straight outs including two strikeouts to leave the bases loaded and seal the game two win and split of the day.
The Wolves totaled four hits as a team as Riley Easterling led the way going 2-for-3 at the plate while Brentley Berry and Josh Boone had one hit apiece. Easterling and Harrison Mohead had one RBI each for the Wolves.
Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no decision while pitching four innings and allowing five runs on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) picked up the win in a relief appearance and moved to 1-3 overall. Hodges pitched three scoreless innings allowing just three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Co-Lin is now 6-13 overall and will return to action hosting No. 5 Lansing on Thursday, March 9. First pitch is set for 4 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
