Wolves Drop Series of Games Against Stars

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action with a trio of games against No. 5 Lansing playing a doubleheader on Thursday, March 9, and a single game on Friday, March 10. The Stars took all three games against the Wolves sweeping the doubleheader with 5-3 and 10-3 wins then took the game on Friday by a final of 1-0.

GAME ONE

The Stars took an early lead with three runs in the top of the first making the score, 3-0. However, the Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to one run as Brentley Berry (Magee) hit a leadoff single and then scored as Tyler Wolfe (Covington, LA) reached safely on an error and advanced all the way to third on the play. Wolfe then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Boone (Foxworth) making the score, 3-2.

The Stars then added one run in the top of the second making the score 4-2. The Stars then kept the Wolves off the board allowing just three hits from the third through the seventh innings while maintaining the 4-2 lead. The final run for the Stars came in the top of the eighth to increase their lead to 5-2.

The Wolve then cut the lead back down to two runs with a single run in the bottom of the eighth as Hagan Coumbe (Utica) hit a one-out double to get the offense going. Coumbe then advanced to third on a single by Berry and then scored on an RBI groundout by Wolfe making the score 5-3. The Wolves then got one baserunner on in the bottom of the ninth with one out, but back-to-back outs ended the game and secured the win for the Stars.

The Wolves totaled six hits as a team with Brentley Berry and Tyler Wolfe both going 2-for-4 at the plate while Harrison Mohead (Madison) and Hagan Coumbe had one hit each. Wolfe and Josh Boone had one RBI each during the game.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 2-2 with the loss while pitching 4.2 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Hunter Rhymes (Lucedale) pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing one earned run on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts while Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing two hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game saw both teams hit singles in the first inning, but neither could push a run across leaving the game scoreless. The Stars then scored two runs in the second and one run in the third to hold a 3-0 lead as the Wolves left the bases loaded in the bottom of the second and then went three-up-and-three-down in the bottom of the third.

The Wolves then had three combined hits in the fourth and fifth innings but were still held scoreless as the Stars maintained their 3-0 lead. However, the Stars exploded in the top of the sixth for seven runs to increase the lead to 10-0.

The Wolves scored all three runs in the bottom of the seventh as Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) reached safely on an error and advanced to second on the play. Babineaux then scored after back-to-back singles by Brentley Berry and Isaac McClenty (Ridgeland). Harrison Mohead then drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Berry then scored on an RBI groundout by Josh Boone, while McClenty scored on an RBI single by Ryland Hemphill (Florence) making the score 10-3. The Wolves looked to continue the momentum, but a game-ending double play secured the 10-3 game two win and sweep for the Stars.

The Wolves totaled seven hits as a team with Harrison Mohead leading the way going 2-for-3 at the plate while Brentley Berry, Isaac McClenty, Josh Boone, Ryland Hemphill, and Christian Cameron (Brandon) had one hit each. McClenty, Boone, and Hemphill had one RBI each during the game.

Cooper Williams (Madison) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 0-3 with the loss pitching 4.2 innings allowing three unearned runs on one hit with five walks and five strikeouts. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing five runs, four earned, with two walks and one strikeout while Javen Moses (Columbia) made a relief appearance allowing two earned runs with two walks. Craig Bass (Brookhaven) pitched 0.2 innings of scoreless relief with two walks and two strikeouts while Tedrick Page (Taylorsville) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with one walk and one strikeout.

GAME THREE

The lone run of the game came for the Stars in the top of the fourth making the score 1-0. The Wolves put pressure on the Stars in multiple innings throughout the game but could not push across either a go-ahead or tying run as the Stars kept the Wolves to just four hits during the game to secure the win.

Hayden Babineaux led the Wolves offensively going 2-for-3 at the plate while Hagan Coumbe and Isaac McClenty had one hit each.

Tyler Wolfe got the start for the Wolves and earned a no decision pitching three scoreless innings allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched three innings of relief and picked up the loss moving to 0-1 while allowing one earned run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with two strikeouts.

Co-Lin moves to 6-16 overall and returns to action opening conference play with Gulf Coast on Wednesday, March 15. First pitch between the Bulldogs and the Wolves is set for 3 p.m. at Sullivan Field.
