Wolves Drop Pair of Games to Rangers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team resumed conference play hosting Northwest Mississippi on Saturday, March 18. The Rangers swept the Wolves taking game one, 9-6, and game two, 4-3.

GAME ONE

The Rangers took an early lead with one run in the top of the first making the score, 1-0.

However, the Wolves responded by taking the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Ryland Hemphill (Florence) drew a leadoff walk. Hemphill later advanced to second on a passed ball and then scored on a two-out RBI triple by Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) who then later scored on a passed ball giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The Wolves then added one run in the bottom of the third as Brentley Berry (Magee) drew a one-out walk, stole second, and then scored as Harrison Mohead (Madison) reached on an error making the score, 3-1. The Wolves added another solo run in the bottom of the fourth as Christian Cameron (Brandon) and Babineaux drew back-to-back walks. Cameron was then forced out as Braydon Evans (Florence) reached on a fielder's choice while Tyler Wolfe (Covington, LA) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Babineaux then scored on a passed ball increasing the Wolves lead to 4-1.

The Rangers responded in the top of the fifth with four runs to take a 5-4 lead then added two runs each in the sixth and seventh innings to increase their lead to 9-4. The Wolves scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth as Hayden Babineaux drew a walk, Braydon Evans singled, and Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Babineaux then scored as Wolfe reached on a fielder's choice while Easterling was forced out at second while Evans then later scored on an error making the score, 9-6.

The Wolves then got a one-out double by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) in the bottom of the ninth, but back-to-back outs ended the inning sealing the win for the Rangers.

The Wolves totaled four hits as a team as Hayden Babineaux went 2-for-2 at the plate while Brentley Berry and Hagan Coumbe had one hit each. Babineaux and Tyler Wolfe had one RBI each to lead the Wolves.

Tyler Wolfe got the start for the Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching four innings allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. Cooper Williams (Madison) moved to 0-4 overall with the loss in a relief appearance while pitching two innings allowing five runs, all earned, on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched two innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts while Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit.

GAME TWO

The second game got off to a vastly different start as a pitcher's duel broke out over the first three innings with the starting pitchers for the Wolves and Rangers stranding every baserunner allowed.

The Wolves broke the scoreless tie with a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Brentley Berry was hit-by-pitch, advanced to second on a groundout by Harrison Mohead, and then scored on an RBI double by Hagan Coumbe giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Rangers tied the game with a single run in the top of the fifth and then took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh making the score, 4-1.

The Wolves then started their comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh as Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) drew a leadoff walk. Thomas then advanced to second on a passed ball and took third after a fly out by Christian Cameron. Josh Boone (Foxworth) then reached safely after a dropped third strike to put runners on the corners with one out for the Wolves. Thomas then scored on an RBI single by Wolfe while Boone advanced to third and Wolfe advanced to second on the play. Boone then scored on a passed ball making the score, 4-3. Mohead then drew a walk to once again put runners on the corners with two outs, while Mohead then stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. A strikeout then ended the inning sealing the win for the Rangers.

The Wolves totaled three hits as a team as Tyler Wolfe, Harrison Mohead, and Hagan Coumbe had one hit each while Wolfe and Coumbe had one RBI each to lead the Wolves.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 2-3 with the loss. May pitched 6.1 innings allowing two earned runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched 0.2 innings in relief allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk.

Co-Lin moves to 7-19 overall and will return to action on the road against No. 13 Jones on Tuesday, March 21. First pitch between the Wolves and the Bobcats is set for 3 p.m., at Community Bank Park in Ellisville.
