Wolves Come Up Short Against Warriors in Doubleheader

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to MACCC action hosting East Central on Wednesday, March 29. The Wolves mounted comeback efforts after losing early leads, but dropped both games to the Warriors as they took game one, 4-3, and game two, 8-7.

GAME ONE

The first game of the day was a scoreless affair through the first two and a half innings of play as the Wolves broke the scoreless tie with one run in the bottom of the third.

Braydon Evans (Florence) got the offense going for the Wolves with a one-out single, then advanced to second on groundout by Josh Boone (Foxworth), and then scored on a two-out RBI single by Brentley Berry (Magee) giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Wolves then increased their lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth as Christian Cameron (Brandon) hit a leadoff single then Ryland Hemphill (Florence) followed by drawing a walk. Cameron then stole third and scored on a double play increasing the Wolves lead to 2-0.

The Warriors then scored one in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. The Wolves then cut the lead down to one run with a single run in the bottom of the eighth as Cameron hit a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball, took third on an error, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hemphill making the score, 4-3.

The Wolves then looked to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out walk, but a strikeout followed by a caught stealing ended the game sealing the 4-3 game one win for the Warriors.

The Wolves totaled nine hits as a team as Christian Cameron and Braydon Evans went 2-for-3 at the plate while Brentley Berry, Ryland Hemphill, Sam Thomas (Ridgeland), Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA), and Josh Boone had one hit each. Berry and Hemphill had one RBI each to lead the Wolves.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start and fell to 1-3 overall with the loss. Pittman threw 6.2 innings allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits with six strikeouts while Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game saw the scoring start in the bottom of the first as the Wolves scored two runs to take an early lead. Brentley Berry and Tyler Wolfe hit back-to-back singles to start the game and then the runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Harrison Mohead (Madison). Berry and Wolfe then scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Christian Cameron and Ryland Hemphill making the score 2-0.

The Warriors then scored four runs each in the third and fifth innings to take an 8-2 lead over the Wolves. However, the Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth as Josh Boone hit a leadoff double and then advanced to second on a single by Berry. Boone then scored on a one-out RBI single by Mohead while Christian Cameron then drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Hagan Coumbe (Utica) then drew a walk scoring Berry while Mohead then later scored on a passed ball making the score, 8-5.

The Wolves then scored one run in the bottom of the sixth as Berry drew a two-out walk and then scored on an RBI double by Tyler Wolfe cutting the Warriors lead down to 8-6. The Wolves then looked to complete the comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh as Mohead drew a leadoff walk, Cameron was hit-by-pitch, and Isaac McClenty (Ridgeland) hit a bunt single to load the bases. Mohead then scored on a double play making the score 8-7 and giving the Wolves the tying run at third base. However, a groundout ended the inning sealing the game two win for the Warriors.

The Wolves totaled nine hits as a team as Brentley Berry and Tyler Wolfe had two hits apiece while Harrison Mohead, Christian Cameron, Ryland Hemphill, Isaac McClenty, and Josh Boone had one hit each. Wolfe, Mohead, Cameron, Hemphill, and Hagan Coumbe had one RBI each during the game.

Conner Wilson (Osyka) got the start and earned a no-decision after retiring all three batters he faced in his only inning of work. Cooper Williams (Madison) took the loss moving to 0-5 while pitching 1.2 innings of relief allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched two innings allowing five runs, all unearned, on six hits with four strikeouts while Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless and hitless relief with two walks and one strikeout.

Co-Lin moves to 8-24 overall, 2-8 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Mississippi Delta on Saturday, April 1. First pitch between the Trojans and the Wolves is set for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field.
