Wolves Split With Trojans

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to MACCC action playing host to Mississippi Delta on Saturday, April 1. The Wolves and Trojans split the doubleheader with the Wolves taking game one, 4-0, while the Trojans took game two, 15-7.

GAME ONE

The Wolves got the scoring started early with one run in the bottom of the second as Christian Cameron (Brandon) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second and third on back-to-back groundouts, and then later scored in the inning on a wild pitch giving the Wolves an early 1-0 lead.

Another solo run scored in the bottom of the third for the Wolves as Brentley Berry (Magee) drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and then later scored on a two-out RBI single by Harrison Mohead (Madison) making the score, 2-0.

The Wolves added their third run in the bottom of the fifth as Braydon Evans (Florence) hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a single by Riley Easterling (Brookhaven), and then later scored on an error in the inning to increase the lead to 3-0.

The fourth and final run for the Wolves came in the bottom of the seventh as Tyler Wolfe (Covington, LA) hit a two-out double, advanced to third as Mohead reached on an error, and then scored on a two-out RBI single by Cameron giving the Wolves a 4-0 lead.

The Wolves then forced three-up-and-three-down innings in the eighth and ninth from the Trojans to seal the 4-0 win.

The Wolves totaled seven hits as a team as Tyler Wolfe, Harrison Mohead, Christian Cameron, Josh Boone (Foxworth), Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA), Braydon Evans, and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Mohead and Cameron had one RBI each.

Tyler Wolfe got the start for the Wolves and pitched a gem for his team grabbing his first win of the season (1-0). Wolfe pitched his longest outing of the season throwing a complete game, two-hit shutout with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The first inning was the major turning point in game two as the Trojans sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs to hold an 11-0 lead after keeping the Wolves scoreless in the inning.

The Trojans then added one run in the top of the second with a leadoff solo home run, but the Wolves responded with their first run of the game in the bottom half of the inning. Josh Boone began the inning being hit-by-pitch and then later stole second after back-to-back flyouts. After Braydon Evans drew a walk with two outs, Hagan Coumbe (Utica) delivered a two-out RBI single scoring Boone and cutting the Trojans lead down to 12-1.

The Wolves then held the Trojans scoreless from the third through the fifth innings while adding one run in the third and four in the fourth. Riley Easterling drew a leadoff walk to start the third inning, and then later advanced from first to third as Christian Cameron reached on an error. Easterling then scored on a one-out RBI single by Boone making the score 12-2.

Coumbe then got the Wolves offense started in the bottom of the fourth with a one-out double, advanced to third on a bunt single by Brentley Berry, and then scored on a second-straight single by Easterling. Berry then scored on a double by Harrison Mohead advancing Easterling to third. Easterling then scored on a passed ball while Mohead advanced on the same play and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Cameron making the score 12-6.

The Trojans then took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the six to score one run and added their final two runs in the top of the seventh making the score, 15-6. Coumbe then hit a leadoff single to start the bottom of the seventh inning for the Wolves. Ryland Hemphill (Florence) led off the bottom of the seventh for the Wolves and crushed a leadoff solo home run to cut the lead down to 15-7. The Wolves then got back-to-back singles with one out from Evans and Coumbe, but a fly out and a pop out on back-to-back at-bats ended the game, securing the win for the Trojans.

The Wolves totaled 12 hits as a team with Hagan Coumbe having a huge game going 4-for-4 at the plate while Riley Easterling had two hits with Brentley Berry, Tyler Wolfe, Harrison Mohead, Josh Boone, Ryland Hemphill, and Braydon Evans having one hit each. Coumbe, Easterling, Mohead, Cameron, Boone, and Hemphill had one RBI each.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and dropped to 2-4 overall. May failed to register an out in the start allowing nine runs, all earned, on seven hits with two walks. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with two walks and one strikeout. Cooper Williams (Madison) pitched three innings of relief allowing one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts while Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched two innings of relief allowing one unearned run on two hits with one strikeout. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched one inning of relief allowing two earned runs on two hits with one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 9-25 overall, 3-9 in conference play, and will return to action with a road trip against the defending national champions, No. 3 Pearl River, on Tuesday, April 4. First pitch between the Wolves and the Wildcats is set for 3 p.m., at Dub Herring Park in Poplarville.
