Wolves Drop Road Doubleheader Against Wildcats

POPLARVILLE – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action against on the road against No. 4 Pearl River on Tuesday, April 5. The Wildcats swept the doubleheader against the Wolves taking game one, 5-1, and game two, 10-4.

GAME ONE

A pitcher's duel broke out in game one as both hits and runs came at a premium early in the game with the starters for the Wolves and Wildcats allowing just four combined hits and no runs through the first five innings.

The Wolves broke the scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the sixth as Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a single by Brentley Berry (Magee) and then scored on a double play making the score, 1-0. The Wildcats then responded with a single run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 1-1.

The Wildcats then allowed just two baserunners for the Wolves in the seventh and eighth innings while adding three runs and one run in the bottom halves of the respective innings to increase their lead to 5-1. The Wildcats then forced a three-up-and-three-down top of the ninth to seal the game one win.

The Wolves totaled six hits as a team with Brentley Berry having a two-hit game while Harrison Mohead (Madison), Ryland Hemphill (Florence), Sam Thomas, and Hagan Coumbe (Utica) had one hit each.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching six innings allowing one earned run on three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) picked up the loss in a relief appearance moving to 0-3 on the season. Bolen did not record an out in the appearance while allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched two innings of relief allowing one earned run on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw the scoring happen early and often as the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. However, the Wolves responded with two runs in the top of the second cutting the Wildcats lead down to one.

Josh Boone (Foxworth) and Hagan Coumbe led off the inning with back-to-back singles while both then advanced bases on a groundout by Ryland Hemphill. Boone then scored while Coumbe advanced to third on an error while Coumbe later scored on two-out RBI single by Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) making the score, 3-2.

The Wildcats then added one run in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 4-2 and held the Wolves scoreless in the third and fourth innings to maintain their lead. A five-run bottom of the fourth increased the lead to 9-2 for the Wildcats.

The Wolves added one run in the top of the fifth as Berry hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on the play. Berry then reached third on a groundout by Tyler Wolfe (Covington) and scored as Harrison Mohead reached on a fielder's choice making the score, 9-3. However, the Wildcats scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth increasing their lead to 10-3.

The Wolves added their final run in the top of the sixth as Ryland Hemphill hit a one-out single and advanced to second on the play. Hemphill then took third on a groundout by Luke Knight (Terry) and scored on a two-out single by Babineaux making the score 10-4. After being held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats then forced a three-up-and-three-down top of the seventh by the Wolves to seal the game two win and sweep.

The Wolves totaled six hits as Hayden Babineaux had a two-hit game while Brentley Berry, Josh Boone, Hagan Coumbe, and Ryland Hemphill had one hit each. Babineaux led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Harrison Mohead had one RBI.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 1-4 on the season. Pittman pitched three innings allowing seven runs, all earned, on five hits with two walks and one strikeout. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) threw two innings of relief allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with four strikeouts while Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of scoreless relief with one walk and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 9-27 overall, 3-11 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Itawamaba on Friday, April 7. First pitch between the Indians and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
