Wolves Stumble Against Indians

GOODMAN – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action with a pair of neutral site games against MACCC foe Itawamba on Saturday, April 8. The Indians swept the Wolves taking game one, 10-6, and game two, 5-4.

GAME ONE

The Indians jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the first; however, the Wolves responded with one run in the bottom half of the innings. Brentley Berry (Magee) hit a leadoff single then Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) was hit by pitch to put the first two batters on base for the Wolves. Both runners then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Harrison Mohead (Madison) while Ryland Hemphill (Florence) drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Berry then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) making the score 2-1.

The next two innings were scoreless for both teams, but the Indians then added one run in the top of the fourth and held the Wolves scoreless to make the lead, 3-1. The Wolves then scored one run in the bottom of the fifth as Braydon Evans (Florence) drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, advanced to third on a groundout, and then scored on a two-out RBI single by Babineaux making the score, 3-2.

The Indians added two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Wolves responded with a single run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Coumbe reached base on an error with one-out while Christian Cameron (Brandon) was hit by pitch to put two runners on for the Wolves. Coumbe then later scored on a two-out RBI single by Evans making the score, 5-3.

The Indians then added one run in the seventh and held the Wolves scoreless making the score 6-3. However, the Wolves fought back in the bottom of the eighth as they scored three runs to tie the game. Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) made a pinch-hit appearance and hit a single with one out, while Luke Knight (Terry) followed with a second straight single to put two runners on for the Wolves. Thomas then scored on an RBI double by Riley Easterling (Brookhaven), while Knight scored on an RBI groundout by Berry making the score, 6-5. Babineaux then hit a two-out RBI double scoring Easterling to tie the game at 6-6.

The Indians then regained the lead scoring four runs in the top of the ninth and the Wolves looked to respond as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but a flyout ended the game sealing the game one win for the Indians.

The Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team as Brentley Berry and Hayden Babineaux had two hits apiece while Ryland Hemphill, Hagan Coumbe, Sam Thomas, Braydon Evans, Luke Knight, and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Babineaux led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Berry, Coumbe, Evans, and Easterling had one RBI each.

Cooper Williams (Madison) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no decision while pitching 5.1 innings allowing five runs, all earned, on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) picked up the loss in relief moving to 0-1 on the season while allowing two earned runs on three hits with two walks. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day also saw the Indians jump out to an early lead with one run in the top of the first. However, this time the Wolves responded with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game as Brentley Berry hit a leadoff double and then scored on an RBI single by Hayden Babineaux making the score, 1-1.

The next two innings were scoreless as the teams combined for just three baserunners, only one via a hit, while the Wolves then broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Christian Cameron got the scoring started as he stepped up to the plate with one out and crushed a solo home run to left field making the score, 2-1. Sam Thomas then followed by drawing a walk, advanced to second on a passed ball, and then scored as Luke Knight reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Knight then scored later in the inning on an error, making the score 4-1 for the Wolves.

The Indians then scored three runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh while holding the Wolves scoreless in both innings including a three-up-and-three-down seventh to seal the game two win.

The Wolves totaled four hits as a team as Hayden Babineaux went 2-for-3 at the plate while Brentley Berry and Christian Cameron had one hit each. Babineaux and Cameron led the Wolves in RBIs with one each.

Andin Bolen (Lucedale) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no decision while pitching five innings allowing one earned run on one hit with four walks and six strikeouts. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) picked up the loss in relief moving to 1-4 on the season. Hodges did not record an out during his appearance allowing three runs, all earned, on two hits with two walks. Coby Gollot pitched two innings of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 9-29 overall, 3-13 in conference play, and will return to action on the road on Wednesday, April 12, against Meridian. First pitch between the Wolves and the Eagles is set for 3 p.m., at Scaggs Field on the campus of Meridian Community College.
