Wolves Split With Eagles On The Road

MERIDIAN – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to MACCC action with a road doubleheader against No. 5 Meridian on Wednesday, April 12. The Wolves and Eagles split the pair of games with the Wolves taking game one, 9-4, while the Eagles took game two, 3-2.

GAME ONE

The Eagles got the scoring started early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead over the Wolves. However, the Wolves responded by taking the lead in the top of the second with three runs of their own.

Harrison Mohead (Madison) hit a leadoff single to get the Wolves offense going and then advanced to second on a passed ball. Mohead then scored on a second straight single by Christian Cameron (Brandon) making the score, 2-1. Braydon Evan (Florence) then drew a walk with one out while Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) singled to load the bases for the Wolves. Cameron then scored on a fielder's choice by Brentley Berry as Easterling was forced out on the play Evans then later scored in the inning on a passed ball giving the Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The Eagles then tied the game at 3-3 with a single run in the bottom of the third. The Wolves then broke the scoreless tie with a solo run in the top of the fifth as Ryland Hemphill (Florence) and Mohead hit back-to-back singles while Cameron then drew a walk to load the bases. Josh Boone (Foxworth) then drew a second straight walk scoring Hemphill to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The Wolves then added three runs in the top of the eighth to increase their lead as Berry and Hagan Coumbe (Utica) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) then bunted to advance the runners, but was safe on the play after an error scoring Berry while also advancing Coumbe to third and Babineaux to second. Hemphill then drew a walk to load the bases while Mohead was hit-by-pitch scoring Coumbe and increasing the Wolves lead to 6-3. Boone then drew a walk with one out scoring Babineaux and making the score, 7-3.

The Wolves added their final two runs in the top of the ninth as once again Berry and Coumbe drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Both then later scored in the inning on a two-out, two-RBI single by Mohead increasing the Wolves lead to 9-3. The Eagles scored one run with a two-out RBI single, but a strikeout ended the game securing the 9-4 win for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team with Harrison Mohead leading the way going 4-for-5 at the plate while Christian Cameron and Ryland Hemphill had two hits apiece with Hagan Coumbe, Hayden Babineaux, and Riley Easterling adding one hit each. Mohead led the Wolves in RBIs with three while Josh Boone had two RBIs, and Cameron had one RBI.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start and pitched an eight-inning gem to improve to 2-4 allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of relief allowing one earned run on three hits with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game of the doubleheader saw the Wolves score two runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead as Brentley Berry drew a leadoff walk to start the game. Hayden Babineaux was later hit-by-pitch to give the Wolves two runners on with one out. Berry and Babineaux then later scored on a two-out, two-RBI single by Harrison Mohead making the score, 2-0.

The Wolves then looked to increase their lead in the top of the second after getting two runners on with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the potential scoring threat to keep the score at 2-0. The Eagles then forced a three-up-and-down inning in the top of the third and scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

The Wolves were then held to just one hit over the fourth and fifth innings as the game remained tied. However, the Eagles took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the bottom of the fifth to score one run and take the lead at 3-2.

The Wolves then had two baserunners in the sixth and seventh innings combined via a hit and a single but could not push the tying run across in either inning to seal the game two win for the Eagles and split of the doubleheader.

The Wolves totaled four hits as a team with Hagan Coumbe, Harrison Mohead, Josh Boone, and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Mohead led the Wolves with two RBIs.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 2-5 overall with the complete game effort allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with one walk.

Co-Lin is now 10-30 overall, 4-14 in conference play, and will return to action with a road doubleheader against Holmes on Friday, April 14. First pitch between the Wolves and the Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m., in Goodman.
