Wolves Split With Bulldogs

GOODMAN – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to MACCC action with a road doubleheader against Holmes on Friday, April 14. The Wolves and the Bulldogs split the action on the day with the Wolves taking game one, 14-4, while the Bulldogs won game two, 5-3.

GAME ONE

The game was scoreless through the first two innings as the starters for both teams worked themselves out of early potential scoring threats, while the Wolves then took the lead with one run in the top of the third.

Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) drew a two-out walk and then scored on an RBI double by Christian Cameron giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Wolves lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when the Bulldogs scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Wolves responded by sending 12 batters to the plater in the top of the fifth and scored eight runs to retake the lead.

Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) led off the inning being hit-by-pitch while Brentley Berry (Magee) followed with a single to put two runners on for the Wolves. Easterling then scored on an RBI single by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) to tie the game while a single by Babineaux loaded the bases for the Wolves. Cameron was hit-by-pitch scoring Berry while Harrison Mohead (Madison) drew a walk scoring Coumbe and giving the Wolves a 4-2 lead. The scoring continued for the Wolves as Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) was hit-by-pitch scoring Babineaux while Josh Boone (Foxworth), Braydon Evans (Florence) and Easterling drew three-straight walks scoring Cameron, Mohead, and Thomas increasing the Wolves lead to 8-2. The final run in the inning came as Boone scored on a sacrifice fly by Berry making the score, 9-2.

The Wolves then added a single run in the top of the sixth as Cameron hit a one-out double and then scored on an RBI-single by Mohead increasing the lead to 10-2. The final four runs for the Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Easterling once again led off the inning being hit-by-pitch. After stealing second, Easterling scored as Coumbe reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Coumbe then advanced to third on a single by Babineaux who later took second on a passed ball. Both Coumbe and Babineaux then scored on a two-RBI double by Cameron, his third double of the game, while Cameron then scored on an RBI-single by Mohead making the score, 14-2.

The Bulldogs then got the first two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh and scored one run from a one-out double, but an RBI-groundout followed by a fly out ended the inning securing the 14-4 game one win for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team with Christian Cameron leading the way going 3-for-4 at the plate while Hayden Babineaux and Harrison Mohead added two hits apiece with Brentley Berry, Hagan Coumbe, and Sam Thomas adding one hit each. Cameron led the Wolves with four RBIs while Mohead added three RBIs with Berry, Sam Thomas, Josh Boone, Braydon Evans, and Riley Easterling adding one RBI each.

Andin Bolen (Lucedale) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 1-3 overall pitching 6.1 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched 0.2 innings of relief retiring both batters he faced.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Bulldogs jump out to an early lead as they scored one run in the bottom of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs then took advantage of two errors by the Wolves in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 2-0 with another single run while a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the third made the score, 3-0.

The Wolves cut the Bulldogs lead down in the top of the fifth as they scored two runs with Harrison Mohead starting the inning reaching base on an error and then scoring on an RBI-double by Sam Thomas making the score 3-1. Thomas then advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored in the inning as Luke Knight (Terry) reached base on an error cutting the lead down to 3-2.

The Bulldogs then added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain their three-run lead at 5-2. The Wolves then started their comeback attempt in the top of the seventh as Thomas stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed a lead off solo home run to right field making the score, 5-3. The Wolves then got back-to-back singles by Josh Boone and Ryland Hemphill (Florence) but a double play followed by a fly out ended the potential big inning for the Wolves and sealed the game two win for the Bulldogs and split on the day.

The Wolves totaled five hits as a team with Sam Thomas leading the way going 2-for-3 at the plate while Josh Boone, Luke Knight, and Ryland Hemphill added one hit each. Thomas led the Wolves with two RBIs while Knight added one RBI during the game.

Tyler Wolfe (Covington, LA) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 1-1 overall pitching three innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched three innings of relief allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 11-31 overall, 5-15 in conference play, and will return to action hosting Southwest on Tuesday, April 18. First pitch between the Bears and the Wolves is set for 4 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
