Wolves Split Doubleheader with Bears

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action with a home doubleheader against Southwest on Tuesday, April 18. The Wolves and Bears split the day with the Wolves winning game one, 11-1, while the Bears took game two, 3-1, in extra innings.

GAME ONE

The game was scoreless through the top of the third inning as the teams combined for just three baserunners and only one came via a hit. However, the Wolves broke the scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the third as Josh Boone (Foxworth) and Brentley Berry (Magee) hit back-to-back singles to start the inning.

Hagan Coumbe (Utica) then hit a third straight single picking up an RBI in the process as Boone scored on the play to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Berry then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) making the score, 2-0. Harrison Mohead (Madison) then followed with a single while Christian Cameron (Brandon) drew a walk to load the bases after Coumbe and Mohead advanced bases on a passed ball. After Coumbe was forced out on a fielder's choice by Tyler Wolfe (Covington, LA) both Mohead and Cameron scored on a two-RBI single by Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) increasing the Wolves lead to 4-0.

The Wolves added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth as Berry hit a leadoff single while Coumbe and Babineaux drew back-to-back walks to load the bases with no outs. Mohead then drew a third consecutive walk scoring Berry while Coumbe later scored in the inning on a wild pitch with Babineaux also adding a run on a passed ball to give the Wolves a 7-0 lead.

The Wolves added three runs to the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Braydon Evans (Florence) led off the inning drawing a walk while Boone followed up with being hit-by-pitch. Berry then reached on a bunt single to load the bases for the Wolves while Babineaux drew a walk with one out scoring Evans. Boone then scored as Mohead reached on a fielder's choice with Babineaux forced out on the play and then Berry scored on the same play to give the Wolves a 10-0 lead.

The Bears then took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the sixth to score their only run of the game and make the score 10-1. The final run for the Wolves came in the bottom of the eighth as Mohead hit a leadoff double and then scored on an RBI single by Cameron securing the 11-1 run-rule victory in game one for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as Brentley Berry led the way going 3-for-5 at the plate while Hagan Coumbe, Harrison Mohead, and Josh Boone added two hits each with Christian Cameron and Sam Thomas adding one hit apiece while every member of the Wolves lineup safely reached base during the game. Mohead led the Wolves in RBIs with three while Babineaux and Thomas had two RBIs apiece with Coumbe and Cameron adding one RBI each.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 3-4 overall with the complete game win allowing one unearned run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day started much the same as the first with no score during the first two and a half innings of play with just five combined baserunners on four hits and one error. However, the Wolves once again broke the scoreless tie with a single run in the bottom of the third as Brentley Berry hit a leadoff single to get the offense going.

Berry then advanced to second on a groundout and then took third on a single by Babineaux. The Wolves then pulled off the double steal as Babineaux swiped second and then Berry stole home to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves then got runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth but could not push a run across to increase the lead. The Bears then tied the game with a single run in the top of the seventh while the Wolves got two runners on in the bottom half, but once again could not score to send the game into extra innings.

The Bears then scored on back-to-back RBI singles to take a 3-1 lead and then the Wolves got a single with one out, but a strikeout followed by a groundout sealed the game two win for the Bears and split of the doubleheader.

The Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team with Sam Thomas leading the way going 3-for-4 at the plate while Hayden Babineaux and Tyler Wolfe had two hits apiece with Brentley Berry, Hagan Coumbe, and Christian Cameron adding one hit each.

Kade May got the start for the Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching seven innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits with six strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) took the loss in relief moving to 0-2 on the season while pitching one inning and allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits with one walk.

Co-Lin is now 12-32 overall, 6-16 in conference play, and will return to action with their final home doubleheader of the regular season as they host East Mississippi and celebrate Sophomore Day. First pitch between the Lions and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field with the honoring of the Wolves sophomores taking place before the first game on Saturday, April 22.
