Wolves Drop Road Doubleheader to Eagles

RAYMOND – The Co-Lin Baseball team started their final week of the 2023 regular season with a doubleheader at Hinds on Monday, April 24. The Eagles swept the Wolves taking game one, 11-1, and game two, 5-3.

GAME ONE

The game was scoreless through the first two and a half innings until the Eagles took advantage of a pair of errors by the Wolves scoring four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead.

The Eagles extended their lead with solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings making the score 6-0. The lone run for the Wolves came in the top of the sixth as Braydon Evans (Florence) led off the inning being hit-by-pitch while Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) followed with a single. Evans later advanced to third on an error and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) making the score 6-1.

The Eagles scored their final five runs in the sixth to make the score, 11-1, and then retired three straight batters in the top of the seventh after a leadoff single by Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) to seal the game one win.

The Wolves totaled five hits as a team with Brentley Berry, Harrison Mohead, Hayden Babineaux, Josh Boone (Foxworth), and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Hagan Coumbe recorded one RBI for the Wolves.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 3-5 overall with the loss. Pittman pitched five innings allowing six runs, one earned, on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Wyatt Hodges (Brookhaven) pitched one inning of relief allowing five runs, all earned, on six hits with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Eagles take an early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first making the score, 1-0. However, the Wolves responded by taking the lead with three runs in the top of the third.

Harrison Mohead (Madison) drew a leadoff walk while Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) followed with a single to put two runners on for the Wolves. Both advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Babineaux and then scored on two-RBI double by Christian Cameron (Brandon) giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead. Cameron then later scored as Braydon Evans reached on an error increasing the Wolves lead to 3-1.

The Eagles then took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the fifth inning to score four runs and regain the lead at 5-3. The Wolves then looked to tie the game in the top of the seventh with a walk by Cameron and a single by Josh Boone with two outs, but a fly out ended the inning securing the game two win and sweep for the Eagles.

The Wolves totaled seven hits as a team with Hagan Coumbe leading the way going 2-for-4 at the plate while Harrison Mohead, Sam Thomas, Christian Cameron, Josh Boone, and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Cameron had two RBIs for the Wolves during the game.

Kade May (Florence) got the start for the Wolves and moved to 2-6 overall with the loss. May pitched 4.1 innings allowing five runs, three earned, on four hits with four walks. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs, MS) pitched 1.2 innings of relief allowing just one hit.

Co-Lin is now 13-35 overall, 7-19 in conference play, and will return to action on the road to close out the 2023 regular season with a doubleheader against Coahoma on Friday, April 28. First pitch between the Wolves and the Tigers is set for 1 p.m., at the Eddie C. Smith Sportsplex in Clarksdale.
