Wolves End Regular Season with Sweep of Tigers

CLARKSDALE – The Co-Lin Baseball team wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a road doubleheader against Coahoma on Friday, April 28. The Wolves swept the Tigers taking game one, 10-6, and game two, 6-1.

GAME ONE

The Tigers took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the bottom of the second to score two runs and take an early lead. However, the Wolves responded with five runs in the top of the third to take the lead from the Tigers.

Hagan Coumbe (Utica) and Harrison Mohead (Madison) drew back-to-back walks with one out while both then pulled off a double steal as Coumbe stole third while Mohead swiped second behind him. Hayden Babineaux (Church Point, LA) then hit a two-out, two RBI single scoring both runners and tying the game at 2-2. While the Wolves then took the lead as Babineaux scored on an RBI double by Christian Cameron (Brandon) who advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored on an RBI single by Josh Boone (Foxworth) making the score, 4-2. After Braydon Evans (Florence) drew a walk, Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) hit an RBI single scoring Boone increasing the Wolves lead to 5-2.

The Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth scoring four runs while taking advantage of three errors by the Wolves to make the score, 6-5. Once again though the Wolves responded with a five-run inning in the top of the seventh to take the lead back from the Tigers.

Boone got the offense going with a one-out double while Evans was hit-by-pitch and Easterling singled to load the bases. Boone then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brentley Berry (Magee) tying the game at 6-6. Coumbe then hit a two-out RBI single scoring Evans while Easterling and Coumbe scored on a two RBI double by Mohead making the score, 9-6. Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) then hit an RBI single scoring Mohead increasing the Wolves lead to 10-6.

The Wolves then allowed three baserunners by the Tigers over the final three innings to secure the game one win.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team with Josh Boone leading the way going 3-for-5 at the plate while Hagan Coumbe and Riley Easterling had two hits apiece with Harrison Mohead, Sam Thomas, Hayden Babineaux, and Christian Cameron had one hit each. Mohead and Babineaux led the Wolves with two RBIs apiece while Brentley Berry, Coumbe, Thomas, Cameron, Boone, and Easterling had one RBI each.

Tyler Wolfe (Covington, LA) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 2-2 with the win pitching six innings while allowing six runs, one earned, on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Cooper Williams (Madison) earned his first save of the season pitching the final three innings of scoreless relief allowing just two hits with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game once again saw the Tigers take advantage of an error by the Wolves scoring one run to take the lead in the bottom of the first. However, the Wolves scored two runs in the top of the third to take the lead from the Tigers and never gave the lead back.

Josh Boone got the offense going for the Wolves with a two-out single while Brentley Berry followed with a second-straight single as Boone advanced to third on the play. After Berry stole second, Coumbe hit a two RBI single scoring Boone and Berry to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead. The Wolves then added a single run in the top of the fifth as Braydon Evans hit a leadoff double, advanced to third on a single by Boone, and then scored on an RBI single by Berry increasing the lead to 3-1.

The final three runs for the Wolves came in the top of the seventh as Boone stepped up to the plate, took one swing of the bat, and crushed an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence for a leadoff solo home run making the score, 4-1. Berry then followed with a single and took second on the play. After Berry reached third on a passed ball, Coumbe reached on an error scoring Berry while Coumbe later scored in the inning on an RBI groundout by Hayden Babineaux making the score, 6-1. The Wolves then forced a three-up-and-three-down inning in the bottom of the seventh to secure the game two win and sweep over the Tigers.

The Wolves totaled 10 hits as a team with Josh Boone and Brentley Berry having three hits apiece while Hagan Coumbe, Sam Thomas, Christian Cameron, and Braydon Evans had one hit each. Coumbe led the Wolves with three RBIs while Berry, Boone, and Hayden Babineaux had one RBI each.

Andin Bolen (Lucedale) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 3-3 overall pitching five innings while allowing one unearned run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of scoreless relief allowing one hit while Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with two strikeouts.

Co-Lin finishes the 2023 regular season at 15-35 overall, 9-19 in conference play.
