Wolves Split Road Doubleheader Against Dolphins

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road for a doubleheader against nationally ranked Delgado on Tuesday, February 6. The Wolves split with the No. 25 Dolphins taking game one, 8-5, and dropping game two, 22-9.

GAME ONE

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first as Jon David Weed (Terry) got things going with a one-out single. Back-to-back walks by Dylan Wesson (Brandon) and Brayden Bankston (Terry) loaded the bases with two outs then a third straight walk to Christian Cameron (Brandon) scored Weed giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Wesson then scored on an RBI single by Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) to increase the Wolves lead to 2-0.

The Pirates then took the lead in the bottom of the first scoring four runs to hold a 4-2 advantage against the Wolves after the first inning of play. The lead was short-lived for the Pirates though as Weed and Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) hit back-to-back solo home runs, both to left field, tying the game at 4-4 in the top of the second.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the fourth when the Pirates scored one run to take 5-4 lead over the Wolves. Once again, the Pirates lead was short-lived though regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as Weed led off the inning being hit by pitch. Weed later stole second, advanced to third, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Wesson to tie the game at 5-5. Bankston, Cameron, and Easterling then hit three straight singles to give the Wolves a 6-5 lead, but a fly out ended the inning for the Wolves.

The Wolves added two more runs in the top of the seventh as Brentley Berry (Magee) hit a leadoff single and then advanced to third on a double by Tucker Jones (Brandon). Berry and Jones then scored on a two-RBI single by Weed giving the Wolves an 8-5 lead. The Dolphins then went three-up-and-three-down in the bottom of the seventh as the Wolves secured the 8-5 comeback win.

JD Weed led the Wolves offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate with one home run while Jordan McKenzie, Brayden Bankston, Riley Easterling, and Brentley Berry had two hits each with McKenzie accounting for one home run. Weed led the team with three RBIs, Easterling had two RBIs while McKenzie, Wesson, and Christian Cameron had one RBI each.

Tyler Ferguson (Bossier City, LA) got the start for the Wolves and picked up a no decision pitching 0.2 innings while allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits and four walks. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) pitched 4.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts and one walk while Wade Barr (Collins) picked up his first win of the season pitching two innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit with five strikeouts and one walk.

GAME TWO

The Dolphins got on the board first in the second game of the day as they plated two runs while taking advantage of an error by the Wolves. The Dolphins held a 2-0 lead at the end of play in the first inning.

However, the lead did not last long as the Wolves scored three in the top of the second to take their first lead of the game as Hagan Coumbe (Utica) drew a one-out walk to get the offense going. Riley Easterling then doubled while Sam Cook (Shubuta) was hit-by-pitch to load the bases for the Wolves. After Coumbe scored on a passed ball, Easterling and Cook scored on a two-RBI single by Brayden Bankston giving the Wolves a 3-2 lead.

The Dolphins then took the lead back with a seven-run second inning highlighted by a three-run home run making the score, 9-3, after the third. The Wolves tacked on one run in the top of the fourth as Jordan McKenzie drew a one-out walk and then later scored on an RBI single by Cook making the score 9-4. The Dolphins then added seven runs in the bottom of the third to increase their lead to 16-4.

However, the Wolves continued to fight their way back in the game as they scored five runs in the top of the fourth as Tucker Jones and JD Weed hit back-to-back singles with one out to get the offense started. Wesson then reached on an error to load the bases for the Wolves while Jones then plated the first run of the inning for the Wolves. Weed scored on an RBI single by McKenzie while Wesson scored on an RBI single by Coumbe making the score, 16-7. After McKenzie scored on a balk, Coumbe scored as Cook reached on an error making the score, 16-9.

The Dolphins then added six runs in the bottom of the fourth and held the Wolves scoreless in the top of the fifth to secure the 22-9 win.

Brentley Berry was the only player with a multi-hit game for the Wolves as he went 2-for-4 while Tucker Jones, JD Weed, Jordan McKenzie, Hagan Coumbe, Riley Easterling, Sam Cook, and Brayden Bankston all had one hit each. Bankston led the team in RBIs with two while Cook, Coumbe, and McKenzie had one RBI each.

Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) got the start for the Wolves and picked up the loss (0-1) pitching 1.2 innings while allowing seven runs, six earned, on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched 0.1 innings of relief allowing five runs, all earned, on six hits with one walk. Judson Griffin pitched one inning of relief allowing seven runs, all earned, on three hits with five walks and one strikeout while Sam Thomas (Ridgeland) pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 3-2 overall and will return to action for their home opener on Friday, February 9. The Wolves will host the Coyotes of Coastal Alabama – South in one nine inning game starting at 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
