Wolves Cruise to Win in Home Opener

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team hosted Coastal Alabama – South on Friday, February 9 to open the home portion of the 2024 schedule. The Wolves displayed dominance on the mound en route to a 7-1 victory.

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as Tucker Jones (Brandon) was hit-by-pitch with one out on the board. Jones then advanced to third on a single by Jon David Weed (Terry) and then scored on an RBI groundout by Dylan Wesson (Brandon) making the score, 1-0.

The Wolves then added six runs in the bottom of the second as Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) and Christian Cameron (Brandon) drew back-to-back walks to start the inning. Both runners then advanced on a groundout by Braydon Evans (Florence) while an RBI groundout by Brayden Bankston (Terry) scored McKenzie making the Wolves lead 2-0. Evans then scored on an RBI single by Brentley Berry (Magee). Jones and Weed were then hit-by-pitch in back-to-back at-bats to load the bases while Wesson drew a walk and Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) was hit-by-pitch scoring Berry and Jones to increase the Wolves lead to 5-0. After Weed scored on a wild pitch, Wesson plated the final run of the inning as McKenzie reached on a dropped third strike giving the Wolves a 7-0 lead.

The lone run for the Coyotes came on a solo home run in the eighth inning while they also loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, the inning was ended with a strikeout followed by a groundout to secure the 7-1 victory for the Wolves.

JD Weed led the Wolves offensively going 2-for-2 at the plate while Brentley Berry and Braydon Evans had one hit each. Dylan Wesson led the team in RBIs with two while Berry, Riley Easterling, and Brayden Bankston had one RBI each.

The Wolves pitching staff was dominant the entire day allowing just three hits and one run across four pitchers used throughout the game. Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start and improved to 1-1 on the season. Pittman threw five innings allowing one hit with eight strikeouts while Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched two innings of scoreless and hitless relief. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) and Jordan McKenzie pitched one inning of relief each with Duncan allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts while McKenzie allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Co-Lin improves to 4-2 overall and will return to action with a home doubleheader against Nunez Community College on Thursday, February 15. First pitch between the Pelicans and the Wolves is scheduled for 3 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
