Wolves Split Doubleheader with Pelicans

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team played host to Nunez Community College on Thursday, February 15. The Wolves and Pelicans split the doubleheader with the Pelicans taking game one, 6-0, while the Wolves rebounded for the game two win, 6-4.

GAME ONE

The Wolves looked to get on the board first in the bottom of the first as Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) drew a one-out walk, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning with the game scoreless.

The Pelicans broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the third highlighted by a leadoff solo home run, and then held the Wolves scoreless in the bottom half of the inning making the score, 3-0.

The Pelicans then added one run in the fifth and two in the ninth while holding the Wolves to a combined two hits and three baserunners from the fourth through ninth innings to seal the 6-0 win.

Dylan Wesson (Brandon), Brayden Bankston (Terry), and Tucker Jones (Brandon) had one hit each for the Wolves.

Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) got the start and picked up the loss moving to 1-1 on the season. McKenzie had two innings pitched allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits with four walks, and two strikeouts. Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) pitched three innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts while Caleb Flynn (Laurel) pitched four innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on four hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day was scoreless after the first inning and a half of play, but the Wolves got on the board in a big way with two runs in the bottom of the second. Jordan McKenzie led off the inning being hit-by-pitch followed by back-to-back strikeouts. Sam Cook then stepped and crushed a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Wolves then added two more runs in the bottom of the third as Brentley Berry (Magee), Tucker Jones, and Jon David Weed (Terry) hit three straight singles to start the inning and load the bases. Christian Cameron (Brandon) then delivered the big hit later in the inning with a two-out, two-RBI double scoring Jones and Weed and increasing the Wolves lead to 4-0.

The Pelicans then plated one run in the top of the fourth, but the Wolves matched with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Brayden Bankston hit a one-out single while Berry followed up by drawing a walk to put two baserunners on. After Bankston was caught stealing third on a double steal by the Wolves, Berry scored on an RBI single by Jones giving the Wolves a 5-1 lead.

The Pelicans scored two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead down to 5-3. However, the Wolves responded with a single run in the bottom half of the inning as Bankston reached on an error to start the inning and later scored to give the Wolves a 6-3 lead.

The Pelicans then got two runners on with one out in the top of the seventh scoring one run in the inning, but the Wolves held off the Pelicans late surge to secure the 6-4 win.

Tucker Jones led the way for the Wolves going 3-for-4 at the plate while Brentley Berry went 2-for-3. JD Weed, Jordan McKenzie, Christian Cameron, Sam Cook, and Brayden Bankston had one hit each. Cook and Cameron led the team with two RBIs each while Jones had one RBI.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start and picked up the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Pittman pitched six innings allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with two walks and a career-high 12 strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of relief allowing one earned run on two hits.

Co-Lin is now 5-3 overall on the season and will return to action hosting Rend Lake on Sunday, February 18. First pitch between the Warriors and the Wolves is set for 2 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
