Wolves Split Home Doubleheader with Dolphins

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action by hosting No. 20 Delgado on Friday, February 23. The Dolphins took game one, 3-2, while the Wolves rebounded for a 6-4 win in game two for a split on the day.

GAME ONE

The Dolphins got on the board first as they scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead over the Wolves. However, the Wolves cut the lead in half with a single run in the bottom of the first as Brayden Bankston (Terry) led off reaching base on an error and then later scored on an RBI triple by Tucker Jones (Brandon) making the score, 2-1.

The Dolphins regained their two-run lead with a single run in the top of the second making the score, 3-1. The Wolves added a single run in the bottom of the third as Bankston hit a one-out single, advanced to second as Brentley Berry (Magee) drew a walk, and then later scored on an RBI single by Jones making the score, 3-2.

The Dolphins then held the Wolves to two combined baserunners over the fourth through seventh innings via one single and one walk to take game one, 3-2.

Tucker Jones led the Wolves offense going 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs while Brayden Bankston collected the only other hit for the Wolves.

Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) got the start and moved to 1-2 with the loss. McKenzie pitched 3.1 innings allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit with one walk and three strikeouts while Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Wolves jump out to an early lead as they plated four run in the bottom of the first. Braydon Bankston hit a leadoff single, Brentley Berry drew a walk, and then Tucker Jones hit a bunt single to load the bases with no outs for the Wolves. Bankston then scored on an RBI groundout by Jon David Weed giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Ryland Hemphill (Florence) then delivered a two-out, two-RBI single scoring Berry and Jones. Hemphill then later scored on an RBI single by Sam Cook (Shubuta) to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Dolphins then scored one run in the fourth to cut the lead down to 4-1. However, the Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth as Jones got the offense going with a one-out single and then scored on an RBI double by Weed. Weed then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan McKenzie making the score, 6-1.

The Dolphins added three runs in the top of the seventh and the tying run reach the plate twice in the inning, but a fly out and a strikeout ended the inning to secure the 6-4 win for the Wolves.

Brayden Bankston, Tucker Jones, JD Weed, Ryland Hemphill, and Sam Cook had two hits apiece accounting for the ten hits for the Wolves. Weed and Hemphill had two RBIs apiece while Cook and Jordan McKenzie added one RBI each.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got the start and improved to 3-1 on the season. Pittman threw five innings allowing one earned run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Coby Gollott (Ocean Springs) pitched one inning of scoreless and hitless relief with one strikeout while Wade Barr (Collins) pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 7-7 overall and will return to play on the road at Hinds on Wednesday, February 28. The Wolves will face the Eagles at 12 p.m., and the Southwest Bears at 4 p.m., at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.
