Wolves Earn Come From Behind Win Against Bears

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action hosting Baton Rouge on Sunday, March 3. The Wolves used a late rally to earn a come from behind win against the Bears, 7-6.

The Wolves got on the board early with a single run in the bottom of the first as Tucker Jones (Brandon) hit a leadoff single, stole second, and then advanced to third as Jon David Weed (Terry) reached on an error. Jones then scored on an RBI single by Sam Thomas (Madison) giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead.

The Bears then took the lead with two runs in the top of the third. However, the Wolves responded with solo run in the bottom half of the inning as Weed stepped up and crushed an 0-1 pitch to left field for a solo home run tying the game at 2-2.

The Bears then scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-2 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves then cut into the lead with a solo run in the bottom of the sixth as Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) drew a leadoff walk. McKenzie then went from first to third on an infield single by Christian Cameron (Brandon) and then scored on an RBI single by Riley Easterling (Brookhaven) cutting the Bears lead down to 6-3.

The Wolves then took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the seventh as Thomas hit a leadoff single and then scored on an RBI double by Hagan Coumbe (Utica). An RBI single by McKenzie scored Coumbe cutting the lead down to 6-5. Sam Cook then drew a walk to give the Wolves two baserunners on while Easterling later drew a second walk in the inning to load the bases with two outs. Braden Freeman (Terry) was then brought in as a pinch runner for Cook while a wild pitch then allowed McKenzie and Freeman to score on one play and give the Wolves a 7-6 lead.

The Bears then got two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth and then got a single to send the potential game-tying run to score, but Weed fired the ball in from left field to get the runner out at home and sealed the 7-6 win in dramatic fashion for the Wolves.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team with Tucker Jones, Sam Thomas, Hagan Coumbe, and Christian Cameron had two hits apiece while JD Weed, Jordan McKenzie, and Riley Easterling had one hit each. Weed, Thomas, Coumbe, McKenzie, and Easterling had one RBI each.

Tyler Ferguson (Bossier City, LA) got the start and picked up a no-decision. Ferguson pitched 2.1 innings allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit with three walks and two strikeouts. Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) picked up the win in a relief appearance and improved to 1-2 on the season. Morgan pitched six innings allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits with one walk and a career-high nine strikeouts. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) got his second save of the season while pitching 0.2 innings and allowing two hits with one strikeout.

The second game of the day was ruled a double forfeit after an altercation in game one involving both teams.

Co-Lin is now 9-10-1 overall and will return to action hosting Gulf Coast and Northwest in non-conference action on Wednesday, March 6. The Wolves will play the Bulldogs at 11 a.m., with the Bulldogs and Rangers playing at 2 p.m., and then the Wolves will play the Rangers at 5 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
