Wolves Split Against Bulldogs and Rangers

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to action hosting Gulf Coast and Northwest on Wednesday, March 6. The Wolves split the day with a pair of one-run games dropping game one against the Bulldogs, 7-6, and rebounding for a 4-3 win over the Rangers in game two.

GAME ONE

The Wolves jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Brentley Berry (Magee) drew a leadoff walk and then advanced to third on a double by Tucker Jones (Brandon). After Berry was caught stealing, Jon David Weed (Terry) drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Jones then scored on an RBI single by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) while Weed then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Thomas (Madison) giving the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs cut the lead down to one run with a leadoff solo home run in the top of the second making the score, 2-1. However, the Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sam Cook (Shubuta) got the offense going with a one-out single while Sawyer Dunn (Magee) drew a walk. After both runners advanced on a groundout, Cook then scored on an RBI single by Jones while Weed then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Coumbe then delivered a two-RBI single scoring Dunn and Jones and increasing the Wolves lead to 5-1.

The Bulldogs then responded with one run in the third and three runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5 while a pair of runs in the sixth gave the Bulldogs a 7-5 lead. The Wolves cut the lead down to one with a solo run in the bottom of the sixth as Berry drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second as Jones reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Weed while a wild pitch allowed Berry to score and Jones advanced to third making the score, 7-6. The Bulldogs then got a strikeout and groundout to leave Jones stranded at third.

The Wolves were then retired in order in the bottom of the seventh as the Bulldogs secured the 7-6 win.

Tucker Jones led the Wolves offensively going 3-for-4 at the plate while Hagan Coumbe added a pair of runs with Sam Cook and Sawyer Dunn adding one hit each. Coumbe led the team in RBIs with three while Jones and Sam Thomas had one RBI each.

Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no-decision while pitching 4.1 innings and allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched 0.2 innings of relief with one walk and one strikeout. Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) took the loss in a relief appearance moving to 3-2 on the season while pitching one inning allowing two runs, both earned, on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Andin Bolen (Lucedale) pitched one inning of relief allowing two hits.

GAME TWO

The Wolves got out to an early lead against the Rangers with a solo run in the bottom of the first. Tucker Jones hit a one-out single, stole second, and later scored on an RBI double by Hagan Coumbe making the score, 1-0.

The Wolves added a second run in the bottom of third as Brentley Berry hit a leadoff single. Berry then advanced to second on an error on a pickoff attempt, took third on a groundout by Jones, and then later scored on a sacrifice fly by Coumbe making the score, 2-0.

The Wolves added their third run in the bottom of the fifth as Isaac McClenty (Ridgeland) hit a leadoff single, stole second, took third on an error, and then scored on a sacrifice fly Jones making the score, 3-0.

The Rangers then tied the game with a three-run home run in the top of the sixth making the score, 3-3. The Wolves then scored a single run in the bottom of the sixth as Coumbe hit a leadoff single and advanced to second as Sam Thomas drew a walk. After Braden Freeman (Terry) brought in as a pinch runner for Coumbe both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) while Sawyer Dunn was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Freeman then scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Cook giving the Wolves a 4-3 lead.

The Rangers then got a two-out single, but the Wolves then got a strikeout to end the game and seal the 4-3 win.

Hagan Coumbe led the Wolves offense going 2-for-2 at the plate while Brentley Berry, Tucker Jones, Sawyer Dunn, and Isaac McClenty had one hit each. Coumbe also led the team in RBIs with two while Jones and Sam Cook have one RBI each.

Coby Gollott (Ocean Springs) pitched a complete game for the Wolves and improved to 1-1 with the win while allowing three runs, all earned, on six hits with nine strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 10-12 overall and will return to action hosting Kankakee on Saturday, March 9. First pitch between the Cavaliers and the Wolves is set for 12 p.m., at Sullivan Field in Wesson.
