Wolves Sweep Cavaliers in Final Non-Conference Doubleheader

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team had one final tune-up opportunity before conference play starts when they hosted Kankakee on Saturday, March 10. The Wolves swept the Cavaliers in dominant fashion taking game one, 8-2, and game two, 7-1.

GAME ONE

After retiring the Cavaliers in order in the top of the first, the Wolves got off to an early lead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Brentley Berry (Magee) got things going with a leadoff triple and then later scored on a one-out RBI double by Jon David Weed (Terry). Weed then scored on an RBI single by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) who also took second on the play. Coumbe advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a two-out RBI single by Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) giving the Wolves a 3-0 lead.

The Wolves then retired the Cavaliers in order in the top of the second and added four runs to their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Isaac McClenty (Ridgeland) got the offense going with a one-out single while Berry drew a walk and Tucker Jones (Brandon) singled to load the bases. Weed then cleared the bases with a triple scoring all three runners and doubling the lead to 6-0. Coumbe then delivered the fourth run with a sacrifice fly scoring Weed and increasing the Wolves lead to 7-0.

The Cavaliers then took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the fourth to score two runs and cut the lead down to 7-2. However, the Wolves added their final run in the bottom of the eight as McKenzie hit a leadoff double and then later scored on a one-out RBI single by Sam Cook (Shubuta) giving the Wolves an 8-2 lead.

The Cavaliers then got a two-out walk in the top of the ninth, but the Wolves got a strikeout to end the game and seal the 8-2 victory.

The Wolves totaled 13 hits in the game as Jordan McKenzie led the way going 3-for-4 at the plate while Brentley Berry, JD Weed, and Isaac McClenty had two hits each. Tucker Jones, Hagan Coumbe, Sam Cook, and Sawyer Dunn (Magee) hit one apiece. Weed led the Wolves in RBIs with four while Coumbe had two with McKenzie and Cook adding one RBI each.

Andin Bolen (Lucedale) got the start for the Wolves and improved to 3-0 on the season while pitching six innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits with five walks and eight strikeouts. Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) pitched two innings of scoreless relief allowing three hits with one strikeout while Wade Barr (Collins) pitched one inning of relief with one walk and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Wolves got off to another fast start in the second game of the day, this time scoring four runs in the bottom of the first as Tucker Jones got things started with a one-out single and then took second on an error. Jones then scored on an RBI single by Hagan Coumbe giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. JD Weed was hit-by-pitch, while Sawyer Dunn drew a walk to load the bases. Jordan McKenzie then cleared the bases with a triple scoring all three runners and increasing the Wolves lead to 4-0.

The Wolves added a single run in the bottom of the second as Isaac McClenty drew a one-out walk but was forced out as Brentley Berry reached on a fielder's choice. Berry then stole second and scored on an RBI single by Tucker Jones increasing the lead to 5-0.

The Cavaliers then took advantage of a pair of errors by the Wolves in the third to score their only run of the game cutting the lead down to 5-1. However, the Wolves gained the run right back in the bottom half of the inning as Weed hit a one-out triple and then scored on an RBI groundout by Dunn making the score, 6-1.

The final run for the Wolves came in the bottom of the fifth as Jones hit a leadoff triple and then scored on an error on the play increasing the lead to 7-1. The Cavaliers were then retired in order for the sixth and seventh innings as the Wolves secured the game two win and sweep on the day.

The Wolves totaled eight hits in game two as Tucker Jones led the way going 3-for-3 at the plate while JD Weed went 2-for-2 with Jordan McKenzie adding two hits and Hagan Coumbe having one hit. McKenzie led the team in RBIs with three while Jones, Coumbe, and Sawyer Dunn had one RBI each.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) pitched a complete game for the Wolves and improved to 4-2 while allowing one unearned run on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 12-12 overall and will return to action with their conference opener on the road against Gulf Coast on Wednesday, March 13. First pitch between the Wolves and Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m., at Ken "Curly" Farris Field in Perkinston.
