Wolves Get Walk Off Win in Sweep of Bulldogs

WESSON – The Co-Lin Baseball team hosted Holmes in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9. The Wolves swept the Bulldogs getting a 7-6 walk-off win in game one and then won game two, 1-0.

GAME ONE

The first game of the day was scoreless through the first two and a half innings of play until the Wolves broke through with a single run in the bottom of the third.

Spencer Wilson (McComb) stepped up to the plate with one out and crushed a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Wolves then added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth as Tucker Jones (Brandon) got the offense started with a leadoff single and the stole second. After Jones tagged up and took third on a fly out, Christian Cameron (Brandon) delivered a two-out RBI triple scoring Jones while Jordan McKenzie (Franklinton, LA) drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. Cameron then scored on an RBI single by Brayden Bankston (Terry) increasing the Wolves lead to 3-0.

The Wolves then added three runs in the bottom of the fifth as Sawyer Dunn (Magee) got the offense going with a one-out walk. Dunn then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Brentley Berry (Magee) while Jones reached base on an error to load the bases with one out. Dunn then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hagan Coumbe (Utica) while Jon David Weed (Terry) scored Berry and Jones with a two-RBI double increasing the Wolves lead to 6-0.

The Wolves shut down the Bulldogs offense from the second through fifth innings allowing just three combined baserunners on two hits and one hit-by-pitch and at one point retired nine batters in a row. However, the Bulldogs took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the top of the sixth to score a run and cut the lead down to 6-1. The Wolves then looked to respond with another potential big inning in the bottom half as they loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout brought the inning to an end with no scoring done.

Neither team had any scoring done in the seventh and eighth innings with each getting just one baserunner in their respective parts. The Bulldogs then took advantage of an error by the Wolves in the top of the ninth leading to five runs in the inning and a tied ballgame. However, the potential go-ahead run was left stranded on third setting up the potential for the Wolves walk off win in the bottom of the ninth.

Dunn started the inning drawing a leadoff walk while Brentley Berry reached base on an error. After Jones was intentionally walked to load the bases, Dunn was forced out at home as Coumbe reached on a fielder's choice. Weed then stepped up and won the game with a walk-off RBI single scoring Berry and giving the Wolves the 7-6 victory.

The Wolves totaled 11 hits as a team as JD Weed led the way with three hits while Tucker Jones and Spencer Wilson had two hits apiece with Brentley Berry, Christian Cameron, Jordan McKenzie, and Brayden Bankston had one hit each. Weed led the team in RBIs with three while Cameron, Bankston, Wilson, and Hagan Coumbe had one RBI each.

Andin Bolen (Lucedale) got the start for the Wolves and picked up a no-decision while pitching six innings and allowing one unearned run on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched two innings of relief allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with four strikeouts while Jayden Duncan (Foxworth) pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two runs, both earned, on no hits with one walk and one strikeout. Coby Gollot (Ocean Springs) got the win in relief and improved to 4-4 on the season while pitching 0.1 innings allowing one hit with one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second of game of the day was scoreless through the first inning and a half of play while the Wolves scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning.

Jordan McKenzie got the inning started with a leadoff double and then took third as Spencer Wilson reached on an error on a bunt attempt. Wilson then took second on a sacrifice bunt by Brayden Bankston while a sacrifice fly by Braydon Evans scored McKenzie to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Wilson then advanced to third on a passed ball, but a strikeout ended the inning before Wilson could score.

The Bulldogs then looked to respond in the top of the third as they got two runners on with two outs and had the tying run at second base, but a fly out ended the inning maintaining the Wolves lead. The Wolves then got a leadoff walk by Brentley Berry in the bottom half of the inning but could not increase their lead.

The two teams then got just one baserunner combined in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Wolves held on to their 1-0 lead throughout play. The Bulldogs then got their best chance of tying the game in the top of the sixth as a two out single pushed the tying run to third base and put runners on the corners with two outs. However, a pop out ended the inning stranding the tying run on third base as the Wolves held the 1-0 lead.

The Wolves were then held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth despite another leadoff walk for Berry. The Bulldogs then got a two-out single once again putting the tying run on base, but another pop out ended the inning securing the 1-0 game two victory and sweep for the Wolves.

Jordan McKenzie had the only hit for the Wolves in the game while Braydon Evans accounted for the lone RBI.

Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) pitched a complete game shutout to improve to 7-4 overall allowing six hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

Co-Lin improves to 22-22 overall, 10-10 in conference play, and will return to action on the road against Southwest as part of the Coca-Cola Challenge. First pitch between the Wolves and the Bears is set for 3 p.m., in Summit.
