Wolves Drop Opening Game to Eagles

MERIDIAN – The Co-Lin Baseball team started their Region 23 Best-of-Three Play-In Series against Meridian on Saturday, May 4. The Eagles beat the Wolves, 11-1, taking the lead in the series, 1-0.

The Wolves scored the first run of the game in the top of the first as Brentley Berry (Magee) hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Berry then advanced to third on a double by Tucker Jones (Brandon). Jon David Weed (Terry) then hit into a fielder's choice scoring Berry as Jones was forced out giving the Wolves a 1-0 lead. After Weed stole second, Hagan Coumbe (Utica) drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. However, a lineout and a strikeout ended the inning with no more scoring done for the Wolves.

The Eagles then looked to tie the game in the bottom of the first as they loaded the bases with one out, but Connor Pittman (Waynesboro) got back-to-back strikeouts to strand the runners and maintain the Wolves lead.

After the Wolves were held scoreless in the top of the second, the Eagles took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second making the score, 2-1. The Wolves looked to tie the game in the top of the third as Jones and Weed hit back-to-back singles to start the inning. However, a double play followed by a flyout ended the inning with the Eagles still leading 2-1.

An early Wolves error in the bottom of the third led to the Eagles adding three runs in the inning and extending their lead to 5-1. After the Wolves were held scoreless in the top of the fourth, the Eagles scored six runs in the bottom half to increase their lead to 11-1.

The Wolves were then retired in order in the top of the fifth sealing the win for the Eagles.

The Wolves totaled four hits as a team with Tucker Jones leading the way with the only multi-hit game with two hits while Brentley Berry and JD Weed had one hit each. Weed also had the only RBI for the Wolves in the game.

Connor Pittman got the start for the Wolves and moved to 8-5 overall while pitching three innings and allowing ten runs, eight earned, on nine hits with seven walks and three strikeouts. Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) pitched one inning of relief allowing one unearned run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Co-Lin is now 27-26 overall and will look to rebound and tie the series against the Eagles on Sunday, May 5. First pitch is set for 3 p.m., at Scaggs Field in Meridian.
