
Wolves Split With Rangers
SENATOBIA – The Co-Lin Baseball team hit the road for their next MACCC doubleheader against Northwest on Saturday, March 23. The Wolves and Rangers split the day with a late rally propelling the Wolves to a 9-8 game one win, while the Rangers walked off game two, 10-9.
GAME ONE
In the first game of the day, the Wolves jumped out to an early lead over the Rangers with four runs in the top of the first as Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) drew a walk with two outs to get the offense going. Trey Davidson (Brandon) then followed with a single as Harrington advanced to third on the play. The Wolves then pulled off a double steal as Davidson swiped second while Harrington stole home to score a run and give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Caleb Brooks (Brandon) then took one swing of the bat and crushed a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run to push the lead to 3-0. Evan Holifield (Stringer) then followed with a single and scored on an RBI-triple by Bradley Hanlon (Monroe, LA) to extend the lead to 4-0.
The Wolves held that lead until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Rangers scored seven while taking advantage of an early error by the Wolves to make the score, 7-4. The Rangers then added a run in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead to 8-4.
The Rangers held that 8-4 lead until the Wolves plated three runs in the top of the eighth as Brooks started the inning by reaching on an error. Holifield then followed with a single while Hanlon drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Brooks then scored on an RBI-single by Brady White (Ethel) while Holifield scored as Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) drew a walk making the score, 8-6. Hanlon then scored on an RBI groundout by Reise Thomas cutting the lead down to 8-7. Tucker Jones then drew a walk to put runners on the corner with one out, but the Wolves then hit into an inning-ending double play as the Rangers held on to their lead.
After a scoreless bottom of the eighth, the Wolves then retook the lead with a pair of runs I the top of the ninth as Davidson hit a leadoff double. Brooks then stepped up, took one swing of the bat, and smashed a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run, his second of the game, to give the Wolves a 9-8 lead.
The Rangers then loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Wolves then got a flyout to end the game and secure the 9-8 victory.
The Wolves totaled 15 hits in the game as Trey Davidson, Caleb Brooks, and Evan Holifield had three hits each while Bradley Hanlon and Brady White had two hits apiece with Tucker Jones and Avery Griffin adding one hit each. Brooks led the Wolves in RBIs with four while Hanlon, White, Griffin, and Reise Thomas had one RBI each.
Cameron Patterson (Central, LA) got the start for the Wolves and earned a no decision while pitching 4.1 innings and allowing five runs, four allowed on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Judson Griffin (Brookhaven) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits with two walks. Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) picked up the win (1-1) with three innings of scoreless relief while allowing two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) picked up his third save of the season with 0.1 innings of relief retiring the only batter he faced.
GAME TWO
The second game of the day saw the Rangers jump ahead of the Wolves with two runs in the bottom of the first making the score, 2-0. The Rangers added another pair of runs in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 4-0.
The Wolves then took the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth as Evan Holifield hit a leadoff single. Bradley Hanlon then reached on an error while Sam Cook (Shubuta) drew a walk to load the bases with no outs for the Wolves. Holifield and Hanlon then scored on two separate wild pitches to cut the lead down to 4-2 while Brad White then drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Avery Griffin then reached on a fielder's choice as Cook was out at home on the play while Reise Thomas then drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Later in the inning, White scored on a wild pitch while Griffin and Thomas then scored on a two-out, two-RBI single by Trey Davidson to give the Wolves a 5-4 lead.
The Wolves added a solo run in the top of the fifth as Hanlon hit a one out single, stole second, and later scored on an RBI-single by White to push the lead to 6-4. The Wolves then added two runs in the top of the sixth as Griffin hit a leadoff single and then took second on a passed ball. Grffin then took third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball as Tucker Jones drew a walk. Davidson then hit a single advancing Jones to third while on an error on the play allowed Jones to score and push the lead to 8-4.
The Rangers then responded with five runs in the bottom half of the sixth highlighted by a two-run home run to take a 9-8 lead over the Wolves. The Wolves then tied the game with a solo run in the top of the seventh as Holifield drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second and third on separate wild pitches, and then scored on a one-out, RBI-single by Cook tying the game at 9-9. The Rangers then hit back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the seventh and loaded the bases with no outs with an intentional walk. The Rangers then won the game with a walk to score and take game two, 10-9.
The Wolves totaled nine hits in the game as Trey Davidson and Avery Griffin had two hits apiece while Tucker Jones, Evan Holifield, Bradley Hanlon, Sam Cook, and Brady White had one hit each. Davidson led the Wolves in RBIs with two while Cook and White had one RBI each.
Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) got the start and earned a no decision with 2.2 innings pitched allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts while Nash Sturdivant took the loss (2-1) with one inning of relief allowing four earned runs on four hits with one walk. Darrin Robbins (Sumrall) and Carter Leggett (Laurel) also pitched in relief while Robbins allowed one hit and one walk while Leggett had one walk.
Co-Lin is now 21-12 overall, 5-3 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road against Gulf Coast on Wednesday, March 26. First pitch between the Wolves and the No. 21 Bulldogs is set for 3 p.m. at Ken "Curly" Farris in Perkinston.
