Baseball Drops Two on the Road at Jones

ELLISVILLE – The Co-Lin Baseball team returned to MACCC play with a road doubleheader against Jones on Tuesday, April 1. The No. 8 Bobcats swept the Wolves taking game one, 8-3, and then walking off game two, 7-3.

GAME ONE

The first game of the day was scoreless through the first two innings, but the Wolves broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Brady White (Ethel) led off the inning with a single and then advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts by Avery Griffin (Brookhaven) and Reise Thomas (Florence). Caleb Brooks then drew a walk to put two runners on with two outs. After Brooks stole second, Trey Davidson (Brandon) hit a two-RBI double scoring White and Brooks to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead.

The lead held until the bottom of the fourth when the Bobcats scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead over the Wolves. The Bobcats then increased the lead to 6-2 with a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Wolves then cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the seventh as White got the offense started with a one-out single. White advanced to third on a double by Griffin and then scored on an RBI-groundout by Thomas making the score, 6-3. The Wolves were then held scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings while the Bobcats increased their lead to 8-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Wolves then got a two-out walk in the top of the ninth, but a groundout ended the game and sealed the 8-3 win for the Bobcats.

The Wolves totaled eight hits as Trey Davidson led the way with three hits while Brady White and Avery Griffin had two hits each with Lucas Harrington (Youngsville, LA) adding one hit. Davidson had two RBIs for the Wolves while Reise Thomas had one.

Cohen Weinhofer (Ocean Springs) got the start and fell to 4-4 while pitching 3.2 innings and allowing five runs, all earned, on five hits with three walks and one strikeout. Jacob Buffalo (Foxworth) pitched 2.1 innings of relief allowing one earned run on three hits with two walks and one strikeout. Darrin Robbins (Sumrall) pitched 0.2 innings of relief with one walk while Dee Morgan (Tallulah, LA) pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout.

GAME TWO

The second game of the day saw the Bobcats jump ahead of the Wolves with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.

The Wolves cut into the lead with a single run in the top of the third as Evan Holifield hit a leadoff single and then advanced to third on a single by Avery Griffin. Reise Thomas then dropped a sacrifice bunt scoring Holifield, but the Wolves left the tying run on second base after a strikeout followed by a flyout to keep the score at 2-1.

The Bobcats then increased their lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth making the score, 3-1. That score held until the Wolves tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth as Trey Davidson hit a one-out single to get the offense started. Lucas Harrington then followed with a single while Sam Cook (Shubuta) reached on a fielder's choice as Davidson was forced out. After Owen Spooner (Stone) was brought in as a runner for Cook, Dylan Wesson (Brandon) delivered an RBI-single scoring Harrington while an error on the play scored Spooner to tie the game at 3-3. The Wolves then left the go-ahead run stranded at third base after a popout ended the inning.

The Wolves then looked to take the lead in the top of the seventh as Gavin Bledsoe (Brandon) was hit-by-pitch with one out. However, the Wolves then had back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. The game looked to be headed to extra innings as the Bobcats went down on back-to-back strikeouts, but a hit-by-pitch followed by a double and an intentional walk to load the bases. The Bobcats then hit a walk off grand slam to win game two, 7-3.

The Wolves totaled seven hits in the game as Dylan Wesson led the way with three hits while Trey Davidson, Lucas Harrington, Evan Holifield, and Avery Griffin had one hit each. Wesson and Reise Thomas had one RBI each for the Wolves.

Jennings Kimbrell (Flowood) got the start and earned a no-decision while pitching six innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Nash Sturdivant (Brandon) took the loss (2-2) in relief allowing four runs, all earned, on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Co-Lin is now 23-16 overall, 7-7 in MACCC play, and will return to action on the road at East Mississippi on Saturday, April 5. First pitch between the Wolves and the Lions is set for 2 p.m., at Gerald Poole Field in Scooba.
