Lady Wolves Double Up Dyersburg State for Second Straight Win

COVINGTON, Tenn. - The Lady Wolves defeated Dyersburg State, 6-3, playing in their second game on their season opening road trip on Friday, August 19, in Covington, Tennessee.

"The girls were excellent going forward during the match which created chance after chance for us," stated Co-Lin head coach Tom Cosgrave. "Taylor Ford was outstanding for us on the wing. Every time that she got the ball, she made it a dangerous situation for the opposition."

Sophomore forward Taylor Ford (Florence) got the scoring started early for the Lady Wolves as she found the back of the net with an assist from sophomore midfielder Sarah Nalley (Brandon) in the 10th minute giving the Lady Wolves an early 1-0 lead. However, Dyersburg State responded with a goal just two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, but the Lady Wolves wasted little time regaining the lead as sophomore forward Jane Claire Newman beat the Lady Eagles keeper in the 14th minute with an assist from Ford to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.

The score remained until midway through the first half as Ford netted her second goal of the first half in the 26th minute with an assist from sophomore forward Jenna Long (Meadville) to give the Lady Wolves a 3-1 lead. Long then earned her second assist of the game as freshman forward Leyton Roberson (Brookhaven) found the back of the net in the 34th minute to increase the Lady Wolves lead to 4-1.

The Lady Eagles scored the second goal of the first half in the 36th minute to cut the Lady Wolves lead down to 4-2, which held until the end of the first half.

Nalley scored the final two goals for the Lady Wolves, both coming in the second half, as the first goal came in the 60th minute while the second came in the 72nd minute with an assist from Long, her third assist of the match, making the score 6-2. The final score for the Lady Eagles came in the final minute of the match giving the final score of 6-3.

"We made a few mistakes defensively throughout the match, but we responded immediately which showed some great team character," said Cosgrave. "The main goal for us, which we achieved, was to come away from this game with no more injuries, improve match fitness, and gain more experience as a team."

"We are very excited to see this squad compete in the MACCC this year," Cosgrave added.

The Lady Wolves will return to action on the road against Millsaps on Tuesday, August 23. The action between the Lady Wolves and the Majors will kick off at 7 p.m., at Harper Davis Field on the campus of Millsaps College in Jackson, MS.
